Thirty Years of Creative Writing in Devizes

The Devizes Writers’ Group celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024. What started as a small group of people writing a set piece once a month has grown to a membership so large the Group has split into three, some still doing set pieces, others aiming for publication with books, poetry and plays in the pipeline.

An award was set up in memory of founder member Sybil Amor, but competitions between members fell out of favour – how can flash fiction, children’s poetry or a radio play be compared and judged?

This left a splendid, but redundant, trophy which will been handed over on into the safe keeping of The Bear Hotel, Devizes, which hosts two DWG meetings a month, to go on display for all to see.

Sybil Amor’s daughter, Becky Edgington, will be attending with Group Co-Ordinator Annie Cooper, at 3 p.m. on Monday to deliver the Trophy to The Bear Deputy Manager Joshua Grigg. It is a supersize red brandy glass on a commemorative base bearing a poem written by Sybil.
