Ex-Kaiser Chief Nick Hodgsonโ€™s Everyone Says Hi Coming to Marlborough

Featured Image Credit: Stewart Baxter

Riot predictor Nick Hodgson formerly of the Kaiser Chiefs has a new band, the charmingly named Everyone Says Hi, and theyโ€™re playing an instore at Marlboroughโ€™s Sound Knowledge, on Sunday 2nd Februaryโ€ฆ.

Everyone Says Hi will play a number of live dates across the UK to celebrate the release of their upcoming self-titled debut album, set for release on 31st January 2025 via Chrysalis Records. The latest single from the record, Lucky Stars, is out now.ย

The band will embark on a run of UK in-store dates, in cities like London, Lancaster, Hull, Bristol, Nottingham, Leeds and Liverpool. The fact Marlborough appears on this and many other major industry playerโ€™s giglists is a testament to the reputation and hard work of Sound Knowledge.

Prior to this, they will perform two newly announced headline shows in support of Independent Venue Week. Frontman Nick Hodgson said of the importance of indie venues, โ€œweโ€™ve just finished a tour of small independent venues in the UK and it really brought into focus for me how precious they are. There are people all over the country working so hard to bring live music to their area and when people turn up and love the gig it really feels like the beginning of something.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a cliche to say that without the small venues there would be no arena bands and festival headliners but itโ€™s definitely my experience with Kaiser Chiefs and Iโ€™m sure for the other guys in the band that independent venues arenโ€™t just a cute little step along the path, they are the path.โ€

Nick has long been a songwriter in high demand. Since leaving his teenage band back in 2012, he has co-written for the likes of Dua Lipa, You Me At Six, Duran Duran, George Ezra, and Holly Humberstone, and collaborated on tracks alongside Mark Ronson, Kygo, and Shirley Bassey. Having racked up over 5 million cumulative album sales globally, Nick now focuses on a new challenge. You wouldnโ€™t bet against him.

Itโ€™s a floaty album of universal indie; instant like from me! Everyone Says Hi sees Nick adopt the role of lead singer-guitarist, and brings together musicians Pete Denton on bass, Glenn Moule on drums, keyboard player Ben Gordon (ex-members of The Kooks, The Howling Bells, and Liverpoolโ€™s The Dead 60s respectively), alongside Leeds based guitarist Tom Dawson. The bandโ€™s name is lifted from a David Bowie song of the same title. What you hear across its ten tracks is high-calibre, beautifully sculpted songcraft performed by high-calibre, experienced players. Not so much showing โ€˜promiseโ€™ here, but instantly delivering bonafide โ€˜big songsโ€™ that belie the bandโ€™s status as relative newcomers. The record was produced by Nick at Londonโ€™s Snap Studios and at his home studio. Pre-order the albumย here.

Everyone Says Hi is the fruit of a multi-platinum musician deciding to draw a line and start afresh. Back to the same bedroom floor where the first tentative notes were played, holding the same guitar that was played way back when, back to forming a band with trusted friends, and back to booking the sticky basement stages where teeth were first cut. But whilst you can metaphorically wipe the slate clean on most things, you cannot unlearn what you already know. If emotionally driven, arena-ready songs come almost second-nature, youโ€™d be foolish to ignore the gift youโ€™ve been given.

Sound Knowledge said, โ€œwe’re delighted to say that Everyone Says Hi will be joining us for one of our first in-stores of 2025. They’ll be playing a stripped back set in the shop itself from 3pm on Sunday 2nd February. Stick a note in with your pre-order to guarantee your place.โ€ Which you can do HERE.

Tickets for all shows are on sale here.

Elles Bailey – at Sound Knowedge, Marlborough

by Ben Niamor

A first outing on Saturday to Sound Knowledge for Devizes favourite Elles Bailey, whose latest album dropped Friday, and this mini tour of a handful of record stores gave us a rare intimate opportunity to enjoy an artist whoโ€™s enormous growth and success has her playing a frequently different kind of larger venue, than the small venues I first saw her in some years ago nowโ€ฆ

Indeed she had played Cropredy the day before, and Glastonbury earlier this year..! I will be honest here, I am a fan.. have been for years. She has always surrounded herself with the most amazing musicians and today was no exception, Joe Wilkins and Demi Marriner, both close friends of hers and co writers and conspirators in the new album, and it showed, the happy ease with which they delivered the meaningful verses of a selection of fine songs from the new album, a real treat.

I already loved 1972, a stand out song partly I confess owing to my having watched the video many times.. that was shot in and around Devizes by some other incredible musicians and creatives, many of us are more than familiar withโ€ฆ the gorgeous humans over at Growvision.. aka Robin and Greta of Beaux Gris Gris fame. Itโ€™s a fantastic video even if you werenโ€™t a D Town native like me.

The song is about a time without mobile phones, and all the trappings of life we think we canโ€™t survive without though most of civilisations history has doneโ€ฆ

Another favourite for me, as Elles does open retrospective and human warmth and truth better than mostโ€ฆ Leave the light on – An open love letter to her husband . An open hearted reflection on how she can live her dreams, and if as the inspiration for this song dictates she arrives home late, her home will provide all the welcome and support imaginable, literally a light left on, like a home fire burning.

Thereโ€™s a theme in Elles entire being, certainly all my interactions with her, a real appreciation and gratitude for all lifeโ€™s opportunities, the love and support of everyone.. the record buyer and fan, of her amazing team and family.. the whole journey.

Perhaps thatโ€™s a marker, a lesson for many less wholesome people in todays music industry..? Be real and treat everyone with love and appreciation and karma will underpin your own growth..? Certainly seems to have worked here.

Anyhow, I digressโ€ฆ the album was gonna be called Silhouette Under a Sunset, originallyโ€ฆ Silhouette in a Sunset – a great new song about souls who you feel have known each other before we have met in this lifetimeโ€ฆ such is the immediate warmth or common ground.

Turn off the news – talks of being grateful for being able to lose ourselves in books, records, etcโ€ฆ a guilt of being able to escape the world at are worst.. summarised in being able to turn off the e-news, which of course sometimes many find they cannot.

Another truthful reflection on life.. Truth ainโ€™t gonna save us – When you have to call the end of a relationshipโ€ฆ the truth and conflicts of lifeโ€™s harder moments.. written with Matt Owens beloved of SK of course in his own right..

Of course all this very real subject matter is wrapped in such gorgeous music, and lighter moments that it connects you with the truth and reflection that makes much of Elles music resonate so strongly with us the listener.

I talked to some new listeners exposed by this local opportunity and hardcore fans alike in the throng, and many with shirts declaring admiration for Elles and other contemporariesโ€ฆ We are fortunate locally we have the incredible Sound Knowledge, and many great venuesโ€ฆ we are considered very well in this area for the love and support of it all.

To quote something Elles shared.. โ€œ โ€œThereโ€™s no destination.. only dreams to realiseโ€ Of course store appearance limited coloured vinyl and deluxe albums were flying out the door.. check out the album and catch Elles on tour, join the ride. Thankyou once again to Elles and Sound Knowledge for all they do.

Robert Vincent & Ryan Davis PAs at Marlboroughโ€™s Sound Knowledge

by Ben Niamor

In this town youโ€™re owned.. Well, I was, for a short set in the sun at the superb Sound Knowledge in Marlborough this weekendโ€ฆ.

Not for the first time we were treated to a store pa in the shire by Robert Vincent; some knowing and some new faces to see him this time. Songs about leaving the world better off, errant politicians who fail to hold our world together, life, love and more. Whatever you consider his genre, which might depend on which song you are listening to, this short set was a treat.

Widely regarded as Americana, indeed my live introduction at his last appearance here was, with long standing friend of his, Matt Owens, promoting Bathโ€™s Americana Festival. The new record continues a tradition of welcoming tunes that will soon be familiar to me, as the last record is, owing to its regular place in the soundtrack to my life. Largely positive if reflective songs that can be enjoyed regularly.

His Last record came out during Covid, so he couldnโ€™t tour it. Gladly this record came out last week and his joking about aliens coming down or what other widespread drama must come along with another album release, appear to be unfounded concerns!

We were treated to a mixed set with some old favourites, and he played the wonderful demons from his first solo record last. So if the Americana vibe is your thing check him out, they have copies of his records at Sound Knowledge.

I love this kind of music so I was back Sunday for my second fix, as this weekend was an extra special double header on store pa with the fantastic Ryan Davis nextโ€ฆ

Second of the weekendโ€ฆRyan Davis

Sunday’s treat was Ryan Davis, on the closing days of a Uk/eu tour. Like a poet who channels the American songwriting tradition, but with a twist, an almost otherworldly aura at times from some looping and effects, used to great effect without being over the top.

Looking into the Louisville based Davis, heโ€™s been in several well regarded bands back home, is a big part of his scene with festival and label responsibilities, but less known this side of the pond. With the variety and popularity of Americana in the Uk, this real deal slice of American music will find legs, a distinct voice, great lyrics and even his own artwork on the coverโ€ฆ No wonder he found himself making an appearance at our own local indie record store.

So, Thank you to the wonderful artists for making a beeline for an indie record store, and thank you to Sound Knowledge for making these things happen, offering us these bonus mini-gigs, the opportunity to get our new records and CDs signed, and supporting quality musicians and artists across genres.

I am a big fan who needs to go more, the welcome, and knowledge and especially at these pa events, an amazing connection with new music, and old favourites.

Iโ€™ve got a pretty good list and pile of records, music that Sound Knowledge has brought into my life. Thankyou Roger and his amazing team. Until the next timeโ€ฆ

When William the Conqueror Came to Marlborough

By Florence Lee

William the Conqueror might not be a band known by everyone, but quite simply should be. With Ruarri Joseph on vocals and guitar, Naomi Holmes on bass and vocals and Harry Harding on drums and vocals, their heavenly harmonies, beautiful music and captivating performance quite literally conquered all expectations the audience walked in with….

Their newly released album โ€˜Excuse Me Whilst I Vanishโ€™ was mixed by Barney Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Stereophonics, Sam Fender) and recorded on vintage equipment to create a sound unlike other Indie Rock artists. Their idiomatic approach to music is refreshing to your ears, especially when being played in the beautiful venue of St Peters’ Church in Marlborough.

It is obvious to see that all band members are and have been friends for a very long time by the ease in their music and performance, but it also clear to see the individual influence on certain songs and performances. With influence coming from all over the music industry, their albums take on a sound unlike others. Mixing blues, folk, punk and groove music hints to artists like Saint Etienne or Joe Bonamassa. Personally, I think the vocals sounds like a slow Antony Kiedis song.

Thanks to Sound Knowledge, I was lucky enough to be able to interview these talented musicians. Read below:

Why are you called William the Conqueror?

โ€˜A combination of being supremely confident and stupid. Sort of what I was like as a child โ€“ so it just to represent that youthful confidence with also youthful idiocy. I was very brave calling us William the Conqueror, but very stupid as well.โ€™

How and why did you come together as a band?

โ€˜That was quite a natural thing that happened. We were all in Cornwall at the same time. We sort of met each other on the Cornish music scene many years ago and started playing together. It was all quite natural. Kind of accidental. Started playing together and then it just became a band โ€“ It is the best way.โ€™

How do you go about writing you music and do you have any tips?

โ€˜Just always have a pen in your hand; you donโ€™t know when some idea might come to you. Late at night generally, on my own with nobody interrupting me. Tired and about to go to bed and suddenly an idea will come and I will stay up for the night. Though, they are usually finished in a soundcheck.โ€™

Where does your inspiration come from?

โ€˜All over. No one place. We are like a Frankenstein band. Naomiโ€™s comes from a kind of disco, groove background. Harry more like funk and soul, mine some blues and folk. We try to chuck it all in and see what happens.โ€™

How did each of you get into music?

โ€˜Just listening. I have always just loved it since I was small. You just react to music and have a love for it. It just takes you over and consumes you and before you know it, you are doing this.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t ever remember thinking โ€˜right I am going to become a musician.โ€™ If you are passionate about it, it just happens.โ€™

If you could play with one band or artist who would it be?

โ€˜Tom Waits โ€“ I would love to play with Tom Waits.โ€™

โ€˜I would like to just be friends with a lot of people. I am not sure I would love to play with them as it would be a bit terrifying. Being around that process would be very interesting, you would learn so much. But I would just sit behind them and worry the whole time.โ€™

One for the drummers: What drum sticks do you use? [Editor’s note: essential question from our wonderful new writer, Florence is drummer for local upcoming band Paradigm – so please, shower their insta with follows!]

โ€˜Well, I use 7aโ€™s, because they are lighter and you can then play light. I like 5aโ€™s because they are a bit more like explosion sounds. I donโ€™t ever use nilon tips, I only use wooden tips because I prefer the sound. Anything I like the feel of really. I use Vic Firth a lot. Tonight I used Vaterโ€™s.โ€™

Thank you very much Sound Knowledge to let me meet these incredible artists,

Florence.

William The Conqueror to Invade Sound Knowledge, Marlborough!

Yeah, not really who youโ€™re thinking of, you history swot! Rather the Cornish Americana/English alternative folk-rock trio of multi-instrumentalists Ruarri Joseph, Naomi Holmes, and Harry Harding, whoโ€™s unique blend of genres from both sides of the Atlantic can be heard on albums such as 2017’s Proud Disturber of the Peace and 2021’s Maverick Thinker.

Yeah, them, well, theyโ€™re paying an in-store visit to Marlborough on the 29th July, via Sound Knowledgeโ€ฆ. theyโ€™re also at Bexhillโ€™s Musicโ€™s Not Dead the day before, if you want to get historically appropriate and as geographically close to The Battle of Hastings and still see this quality band!

Theyโ€™re there as part of an album launch tour, โ€˜Excuse Me While I Vanishโ€™ released on 28th July, via Chrysalis Records. The story of the album goes along the lines of frontman Ruarri Joseph finding himself cocooned at home during lockdown, ruminating on an uncertain creative future, watching on as his wife Mandy, a valiant mental health social worker, engaged with the all-too-real dilemmas of the pandemic-riven here and now. Her example motivated Joseph to become a temporary care worker, an experience which would provide renewed focus and influence the songwriting on the new album.

โ€œMy wife was insomniac for the first six months of lockdown, which made it impossible for me to moan or grieve the fact that everything Iโ€™d been working on for the last five years had come to a standstill,โ€ he explains. โ€œIt was a much-needed perspective and made me realise what a selfish undertaking William had been โ€“ navel-gazing with my head in the clouds when what people needed was boots firmly on the ground, preferably on the feet of someone like Mandy.โ€

But, the bandโ€™s fourth album finds the indie-rock trio firing on all cylinders as Joseph confronts the thin line between creativity and madness, inspired by compassion for the real-life angels of the world.

Produced by the band in a playground of vintage gear, and mixed by Barny Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender, Kasabian), the resulting albumโ€™s ten tracks marry earworm tunes with insistent, imperious, soaring rock shapes, punctuated by chorus hooks that are simultaneously nuanced and anthemic. Josephโ€™s compelling semi-spoken vocals and swamp-blues-Seattle-scuzz guitars are propelled by the rhythm section of Naomi Holmes and Harry Harding as โ€˜Excuse Me While I Vanishโ€™ delivers an effortlessly winning blend of melody and ensemble dynamics, the most accomplished William The Conqueror album to date.

With William The Conquerorโ€™s live performances drawing wildly enthusiastic comparisons to the likes of Kings of Leon, Nirvana, Buffalo Tom and The Marshall Tucker Band, the trio performed to a packed room at The Great Escape earlier this year and recently completed a European tour with Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats.ย

The band will also play at Latitude Festival this month, before embarking on a nationwide in-store tour in support of the albumโ€™s release across July and August and a full headline tour in October. Other venues close to us include Bristolโ€™s Rough Trade on 30th, and Oxfordโ€™s Truck Store on 1st August, but the all live shows are based in larger towns and cities, you have to hand it to Roger and his team at Sound Knowledge, the ones who brought George Ezra to Trowvegas, theyโ€™re bringing in the names only cities would get the pleasure to witness, and this particular gig is certainly one the eye for olโ€™ Haroldโ€ฆ..sorry, I couldnโ€™t resist!

The trio will be playing a short set at St. Peter’s Church, Marlborugh on Sat 29th July. It’s a FREE event, but let the record store know if you’d like to attend by sending them a message or popping a note in with your album pre-order, HERE.

Thoughts About George Ezra at Trowbridgeโ€™s Civic

Yes, I did, thank you; and what a brilliant show it was last night when George Ezra came to Trowbridge!

Consider the punks, who spat at conformity, consumerism and societyโ€™s esteem of pop culture, are now near, if not pension age, when digestating the derisions and jeers from a few when I told them โ€œIโ€™m going to see George Ezra.โ€ Marketed commercialisation, yeah, I get that; if for the pre-gig meal we frequented the golden arches, I was more than disappointed my โ€œItalian Stackโ€ was just a cheeseburger with rocket salad and pesto sauce. I mean, who puts a pasta sauce on a burger, adding insult to injury what with the broken milk shake machine, my only guilty pleasure from Ronald?

For them though, I bid they take heed of my anecdote more than those who attended George Ezra at Trowbridgeโ€™s Civic Centre yesterday, which, like many of my yarns, begins with me spending a penny. Upon my return to the hall, in which we were instructed in this record-breaking heatwave to โ€œsqueeze in as tight as possible,โ€ a few had gathered behind my teenage girl posse. With my customary irony I nudged in front, โ€œmake way, responsible adult coming through!โ€ only to note Iโ€™d obscured the view of a young girl behind me.

The expression of anticipation at seeing George Ezra drained from her face, unacknowledging now sheโ€™d only see the back of a podgy middle-aged parent in a Batman t-shirt. But before she could completely well-up, I promised to stand aside as soon as he came on stage, but if I moved now someone not so willing might push in. Though she doubted my conviction, I did retreat from my position, her parents expressed their gratitude. The space my belly once occupied ample for her to sing and dance her heart out, which she did, and her expression of sheer joy made my night.

Because, while George and his band mayโ€™ve only blasted a job-and-finish half-hour set at us, damn it the guy puts some umph in. Honestly, heโ€™s like the geek of a Saturday supermarket job who really puts his all into shelf-staking. Professionally executing the placid and sincere pop star persona, the guy convinced me heโ€™s the genuine article, finding time to box-in his every known popular tune. Sure, playing through his new album The Gold Rush Kid, was a pointless marketing exercise, being the ticket price included a copy of it, but there was everything there youโ€™d expect from an upcoming musician and none of the bravado of celebrity; passion, drive, and even some narrative of backstory.

But for his best efforts, I owe it to the little girl in front of me, and every other screaming teenager or child, to express what a superb evening it was, her mien said it all. For it was never about anti-corporatism critics, rather the rare opportunity for youths to see a popstar in the flesh, in Trowbridge, which would otherwise cost the parents something quite unaffordable in tickets and travel costs.

Doubtless this was The Civicโ€™s finest half-hour, though structured without encore, for less than a purple one, we got our moneyโ€™s worth in George and his bandโ€™s dynamic performance; worth the hassle of fastest-finger first ticket booking system, which sold out in seconds of going online, queuing in the heat only to be squashed in like sardines, but perhaps not the no drinks policy profiteering attitude, which saw the bar closed and only bottled water they sold allowed. Maybe laws have changed without my knowledge, but I assumed not providing free drinking water was unlawful, and even if not, itโ€™s safety and basic etiquette poorly overlooked by The Civic.

Yet we owe it to Marlboroughโ€™s music shop, Sound Knowledge for this most excellent show. Must be best part of quarter-of-a-century Roger has been the best purveyor of records around these backwaters, and stayed afloat through this technology-changing era by hosting these fantastic album marketing gigs. Usually based in the shop itself or in the club opposite, itโ€™s bought many an upcoming act to Marlborough, including Ezra in 2014. The only other time a band has been too big to fit in was when they shifted Ragโ€™Nโ€™Bone Man to the College campus, but George was too bigger name, even for this venue, causing the organisers to add a matinee at the Civic.

But usually, thereโ€™s a post-gig meet-and-greet opportunity, something though we took our CDs we had to accept wouldโ€™ve sadly been unviable due to the vast number of attendees. And that, in a nutshell, whitewashes any niggly criticisms, because maybe restrictions have to be set in order to pull off an event of this magnitude, perhaps you do have to shout orders at the crowd and search childrenโ€™s bags in this day and age. Even though this isnโ€™t what Iโ€™m used to, I was happy in the knowledge that for many there, this was not just a golden opportunity, but a first-time concert which will live in their memories forever.

It got me thinking of my first ever gig, about the same age as my daughter and her friends now. To set the bar high, it was Bruce Springsteen, and, George, sorry mate, but through rose-tinted specs, while you werenโ€™t quite that good, you were totally amazing. Proof of this goes along the lines of me mumbling the words to Shotgun all day today, the profound effect is unimaginable for those younger, if it got this grumpy old git inspired!

Sound Knowledge has become renowned for these instore events, while it’s great promotion for new releases from the artists, they’re also an affordable opportunity for locals, particularly younger, to get to meet, greet and hear them play, which would usually involve trekking to a festival or city-based gig. Though while Sound Knowledge have hosted all manner of artists in the past, George Ezra has top the lot, hence a larger venue is needed. Of course, this puts something of a tag on Trowbridge too, and I’m hopeful it’ll really lift an already blossoming reputation for the town’s live music scene, of which Kieran Moore and others has worked so tirelessly to attain.

And afterwards, perhaps my daughter and I can slip his CD in my car stereo and finally find some common ground!
