For Newsquest, unfortunately, the Chase is over! Sure, I pipped them to the post on the McDonalds application fluff last week, but that could’ve been anyone’s. I’ll hold my hands up; I did it because, from time to time, the clickbait headline is a must. But day-to-day I’m not fussed over hits.
Our focus is on the pub without a celebrity appearance. The venue where there might be a person, or group of, you don’t know, or at least the television-addicted, cheesy puffs munching sofa-surfers majority don’t know, but you’ve heard of, or are taking a chance on, because you read Devizine. Because you trust us when we tell you that this person, or persons, have spent years perfecting their art, rehearsing together, writing songs, painting, learning their lines, or finding the right chords to match, and in culmination they do so for purely for the love of it, perhaps in hope to put food on the table, and to provide something together…..to entertain you.
Here at Devizine we will report on the amateur, the upcoming local talent, with equal gusto to an event who’s booked a top name. We don’t do this for hits, we do this because we believe there’s a truckload of skilled actors, musicians and artists around these rural backwaters who are going unnoticed by the mainstream media, and what is more, they deserve so much more than this. But there you have it, try as we must! If I did this for payment I’d have quit years ago!!
So, check out July on our event calendar now, and recheck again as we go through the month, because it is constantly updating. Don’t rely on that event popping up on your Facebook feed any more than local newspapers telling you about it; all social media platforms have lots of political propaganda to throw at you, paid mush adverts, wonky opinions, and cringeworthy pictures of someone you don’t even knows’ supper. There’s no room left on there to show you the gig your mate is putting on down your local, and you cannot expect them to find the space, because, to them, spreading hatred and causing division among the masses is far more important. Stop the clock, Bradley, that is wrong.
There’s no polite way to explain it, but I think you should face facts; mainstream media is a big bag of swollen bollocks, and locally, it’s competing with social media for cringe clickbait, whilst failing to showcase and highlight the real people out there, striving to be creative. Send me your thoughts on that in emoji or as an AI poster, if you care to, I’ll be too busy to answer them, as I’ll be covering as much of what’s really going on locally as I possibly can!

Longleat Ghost Tours
This October Half Term, Ghost Tours are making a spooky return during Longleat’s Great British Autumn event. Longleat House was built between 1567 – 1580, and it is believed to still have people who featured in its history making their presence felt. Discover the supernatural stories as expert guides reveal the tale of Lady Louisa Carteret, known as the Grey Lady, who is said to still walk the corridors searching for her lover.

We have designed these ‘Lights Up, Sounds Down’ days to reduce sensory input for individuals who would prefer a quieter experience. These sessions are primarily for, though not limited to, anyone who has sensory processing disorder; autism; social, emotional or mental health needs; dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or any other sensory needs.
During these days we will have:
Lights On – our overhead gallery lighting will be turned on, without spotlights, to create a brighter environment in which to explore. Sounds Down – we will reduce sound effects throughout the museum as much as possible by turning off most ‘surround sound’ interactives and reducing volumes. Sensory maps – we have marked out any areas around the museum where you may find louder interactives or visual effects that we cannot turn off. This means you can choose your own route and avoid any areas as you wish.
If you would like to bring any sensory items (including but not limited to ear defenders, magnifying glass, book, squeezy toy) that will help you or your loved one to enjoy their experience better, please feel free to do so, just make sure you hold onto it and take it home with you!

Pirate Princess is a heartwarming story of hope against adversity told with physical theatre, clowning and circus. This brand new solo show by circus performer and professional idiot Gemma Bond tells the tale of poor shipwrecked Princess Poppy. Inspired by strong and inventive women of history, Poppy must transform physically and mentally if she is to have any hope of rescuing herself from eternity on an island in the ocean. The show encourages all to reuse, repurpose and recycle as Poppy reinvents her outfit and her mindset to overcome her predicament.

On Monday 13th Strictly Come Dancing champion Giovanni Pernice invites you to join him on a journey to his homeland for his production of Made in Italy at the Wyvern, Swindon.
Tuesday 14th sees The Classic Rock Show at the Wyvern, Swindon. Bath Phil & Jeneba Kanneh-Mason at Bath Forum and Future Cavemen at Komedia.

All welcome on March 4th to the Three Crowns where we’ll have a daytime open mic, the fantabulous Talk In Code will playing too and you can laugh at me reaching the half-century mark.
Spoiled for choice in Devizes on Saturday 18th, Thin Lizzy founder and guitarist Eric Bell arrives at Long Street Blues Club, head-to-head with Devizes Festival of Winter Ales, fantastic improv comedy with Instant Wit at The Wharf Theatre; decisions, decisions, but you need to make your mind up and get tickets, though if you fail, Black Nasty is at our trusty Southgate.
