A Positive Week After Wiltshire Music Awards

Best part of a week since Stone Circle Music Eventsโ€™ Wiltshire Music Awards and Iโ€™m still at one thousand feet about what we achieved, and dealing with a cascade of feedback. While some of it has been appreciated constructive criticism, that crazy playground called social media is such that some comments have become unfair, misinformed or even blatantly untrue. I prefer to remain positive, thanks all the same! And here we are, beginning to see positive after effects of the whole grand shebangโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Iโ€™ve loved seeing winning and runner-up acts, if not just posting pictures and videos of themselves proudly grasping their trophies, but using their win as an accolade on gig posters and bios. If thatโ€™s not a positive outcome in a time when the whole hospitality industry is at its knees, I frankly don’t know what is. Try proving me wrong on this, I double-dare you and might even throw in a Twix for first prize!

There was also the whole โ€œconventionโ€ side to the event too, which saw networking between musicians and venues, radio stations and promoters, and the general get-together of folk usually individually dispatched to their respective gigs on a weekend. I have already seen gig posters with added support acts who didnโ€™t know each other before last Saturday, and radio plays for bands featured.

From my good friend Charlotte reuniting with Lifetime Achievement winner Peter Lamb, the producer who took her hopeful nineties girl band under his professional direction, to Fantasy Radio DJ, Mark Lister, who mentioned the awards on Scott Mills Radio 2 morning show, the attention the awards are seeing is phenomenal and the after effects are beginning to flourish.     

If Sunday’s piece was a reflection on the night as a whole and a statement of the issues we unfortunately faced. Let today be about our fantastic acts who performed, for that’s where sparks flew and obviously the nature of what we were celebrating.

Ruby Darbyshire

In order of appearance. Go on, admit it, you didn’t know the sublime Miss Ruby Darbyshire would be present, did you? I managed to not let the cat out of the bag about our opening special guest, despite my excitement!

At eighteen, Ruby is as her name suggests, a gemstone on our circuit. A multi-instrumentalist with bagpipes under her championship belt, a singer-songwriter with an exceptionally soulful voice which puts expression into her diligently crafted writing. Originally the plan was for Ruby to blow a tune of her own choice from her bagpipes and scoot off to another gig in Bradford-on-Avon, returning later in the evening. But we couldn’t let her go without at least another song, her magnum opus to date, Crowded Lightbringer, and then she played a second. It was the best opening ever, even if I was blindly operating the curtains like a bell ringer!


The Britpop Boys

Hey, honestly, I was a raver in the nineties and viewed Britpop as regressive, but I now see its worth and respect the succeeding generation who see them as classics. Being such, we see a lot of cover bands performing Britpop anthems, with varying degrees of skill. The Britpop Boys have been on my must-see list for donkeys but our paths hadnโ€™t crossed before. Iโ€™m glad thatโ€™s sorted and sound, for they were off the scale brilliant and totally โ€˜avinโ€™ it are kid.

I was sitting on the stageโ€™s sideline in awe of The Britpop Boys, it couldโ€™ve been Madchester in 1996. The sound and appearance held me spellbound, and I felt I should write to The Oxford Dictionary to redefine the word โ€œcoolโ€ as โ€œsee Britpop Boys!โ€ Yeah, they did Wonderwall, of course they did, but if itโ€™s a cliche cover choice for most, itโ€™s because itโ€™s a beautiful crowdpleaser, and had to be done given only three songs. The ultimate thing about this was, they knocked it out of the Corn Exchange and into the stratosphere; Iโ€™ve never heard it done with such attention to detail and precision to honour the original.


Burn The Midnight Oil

If Iโ€™ve seen one new band begin wobbly and develop over time Iโ€™ve seen a hundred. But Burn the Midnight Oil is one of my most favourite newcomers to the Wiltshire music scene, for the simple reason that it feels like theyโ€™ve been here forever, as their ability to deliver crisp blues-rock originals and stamp covers with their own divinity is something to behold. Like mobile phones, you think, how did we ever survive without Burn the Midnight Oil?!

Itโ€™s as if they honed their skills over decades and perfected the harmony of a classic rock band in their eighties which toured since their twenties, even if they might have, they did so individually, but that seam never shows. Their perfect performance proved this, it was nothing short of brilliant, fresh and invigorating, showing us what theyโ€™ve been working on, a beguiling harder rock sound; they look the part, they sound it too, I have high hopes for them.


Matchbox Mutiny

Ben was great as a soloist, Pat was too, together itโ€™s a magical connection to charm the pants off a donkey. This cover act could easily work anywhere, from crusty cider festival to wedding reception, itโ€™s got universal appeal. Their set was amazing, Ben might have accidentally hit me on the head with his guitar but they were awesome, and Iโ€™ve had worse on my rock n roll journey!!

It mightโ€™ve knocked some sense into me, but I know what I liked anyway, and Matchbox Mutiny are high on that list.


George Wilding

George went next, and yeah, this is where we had technical sound issues. Professional till the end, George worked through it, and as a stalwart spirit on our circuit, George is modestly legendary, for his back catalogue of sublime originals and new songs flourishing to his entertaining interactive solo covers show. Lucas Hardy

With various issues arising the evening was in need of a reset. I apologise, I announced an interval, thinking Lucas could prepare and we could hold a team talk. Just like George Wilding, Lucas is professional and motivated to the core. He came out like a boxer for a championship belt fight, psyched up for it and couldnโ€™t wait for the bell! Therefore I attempted to recall the interval idea as quickly as possible, because Lucas Hardy was like a greyhound out of the trap! And what an outstanding performance, rinsed with sheer brilliance, Lucas is no stranger to award winning, itโ€™s easy to see why.


Nothing Rhymes With Orange

As it was it was impossible to estimate how much time the award giving and other acts would take, I apologise if we wrongly assumed time was against us and lengthy speeches were deemed something unpredictable enough to encourage people to keep them short if at all. The original plan therefore was that our Devizes homegrown heroes, the teenage band which shook the rafters of this market town and deployed their exceptional talent to Bristol to further the phenomenon of Nothing Rhymes With Orange, were to play out until the end.

We finished earlier than expected, the barriers broke down, and there to help create a needed frenzy of excitement, ready and eager, was this successful Devizes export, for a hometown return like no other. Nothing Rhymes With Orange were mindblowingly fantastic before they left for Uni, now itโ€™s a monster.

I was ecstatic to see the guys again, and they threw everything into their solid performance, as they always do. They return to Devizes for the Arts Festival, something we wouldโ€™ve been singing from the highest tree about anyway, but after last Saturday, itโ€™s surely unmissable.

Iโ€™ve given my thanks already, Iโ€™d like to do it again, to all our performing acts, for you made the ceremony, you furnished it with your brilliance, and that was what the night was always supposed to be about; cheers!


Shearwater: New Single From Nothing Rhymes With Orange

Thereโ€™s a new single from Bristol-based Nothing Rhymes With Orange out tomorrow (Saturday 20th September) which takes the band to a whole new level, and it has got me thinking back to their Devizes rootsโ€ฆ..ย 

You know, I really cannot remember how this thing started, if they contacted me or if I found them. It was three years ago, at a time when local media seemed rampant with scare stories sensationalising teenage hooliganism. Folk jumped the bandwagon, naming and shaming wayward youth on Facebook like it was modern gallows, and making fearmongering sweeping generalisations, classing every child as a psychotic delinquent.

I figured this wasn’t the same picture I was seeing. That thereโ€™s always been a handful off the rails, but in comparison to previous generations, most Gen Z were passive, thoughtful, and creative. So I set out to prove this wonky narrative wrong, and in doing so found many aspiring teenage bands to use as examples, but none so accomplished and motivated as Nothing Rhymes with Orange.

There was always something staunchly between the members of this Devizes School band, frontman Elijah Easton, Sam Briggs, Fin Anderson-Farquhar, and drummer Lui Venables, an unequalled camaraderie which combined their honing skills harmoniously. Their calculated sagacity writing painted a blithe picture of Gen Z, equal to how punk bands like The Newtown Neurotics summarised life for generation X, and it spawned a zeitgeist.

Moments after reviewing their debut single, Chow for Now, they launched an equivalently impressive EP called Midsummer. I figured it was overdue to check them out live, as they organised their own gig at West Lavington Village Hall. Divided between parents and youth I witnessed the birth of a local phenomenon. I dubbed it โ€œBeatlemania in Devizes.โ€ Teenage fans chanted the chorus of Manipulation back at them, as Elijah jumped from the stage relishing in the moment.

I encouraged teenage budding writers and photographers to record this blossoming movement for us, as alongside bands like Melkshamโ€™s The Sunnies, they were inspiring a new generation of musicians too. And for the adults, I wanted them to quit whinging about youth, by showcasing NRWO in an environment free from age division, where they could see for themselves this emergent youth fandom and the local band which created it. I urged our carnival committee that their annual โ€œInternationalโ€ Street Festival in Devizes should showcase such a local act, and pride overcame me as I introduced them to the masses gathered in the Market Place, because alongside their excellent self-promotion, Devizine expressed with honesty that townsfolk should support this spectacular homemade band, and they did.

The lads released several new songs, all of which were tiny progressive steps to a maturity in their sound. At a gig at The Three Crowns in May 2024 Devizes-own BBC DJ and presenter, James Threlfall gave me constructive criticism regarding their production levels, suggesting it wasnโ€™t quite to the level necessary and in comparison to upcoming bands across the southwest. I also worried at this time, moving along that adolescent rocky road generally was the make or break of a young band, usually the latter.

Delighted that they planned to study together in Bristol Uni, I finished off our local angled reporting of them with a parting interview, safe in the knowledge both the uni and bustling life in Bristol would open new doors for them and hopeful it would perfect their skills to the level James so honestly pointed out. A huge festival touring summer at Dot 2 Dot, Golden Touch, 110 Above and Camper Calling, returning to Studio 91 for the session which produced their new ear-invasive single, Shearwater, out at 6pm on 20th September across all streaming platforms, surely proves they have.

Shearwater signifies a hotly-anticipated next chapter, one of huge guitar sounds, jacked up drums and Elijahโ€™s desperate vocals, evoking stories of fiery lust and explosive aftermaths. This is the single which will do for an international audience what Nothing Rhymes With Orange did locally three years ago. The spritely frenzy is replaced by the concentrated rhythmic flow and evocative ambience of the kind of timeless indie-pop anthem a multitude of audiences will shine their phone torches too. The layers are divine, the composition professionally crafted.

Iโ€™ve never needed to exaggerate my appraisal nor flatter NRWO for encouragement. I saw this potential, as did their local fanbase. And tomorrow you can hear the fruits of their labour in full bloom, a categorical advancement of Devizes export to the world, and it makes me feel proud to have backed them to this point, what the future holds is answered in this track, and it looks orange!

But donโ€™t just take my word for it; chatting to James Threlfall just yesterday, I pointed out this single felt like the entry level we were talking about last May, and he agreed, telling me they’ve landed a featured artist spot on BBC Introducing South and West, which is live at 8pm tonight (Thursday 8pm.) The single will be debuting live at their upcoming headline show, 26th September, at The Old England, Bristol. Thereโ€™s also an exciting word on the grapevine: an album is the pipeline. Oh, and donโ€™t forget they’re playing our Wiltshire Music Awards on 23rd October here in Devizes, and will be at Devizes Arts Festival next summer like Bruce Springsteen returning to New Jersey!

For me, Iโ€™ll always have those early moments, like blagging a Sharpie from the sound engineer at street festival, so teenage girls could have their T-shirts signed (not by me, you understand?!!)


Revealing the Line-Up For The Wiltshire Music Awards 2025

As a result of probably the most productive meeting yet, yesterday, about The Wiltshire Music Awards, we can now reveal the most amazing line-up of local music acts who will be performing between the announcements at our grand ceremony on Saturday 25th October at Devizes Corn Exchange, and a few other points we should mention tooโ€ฆ..

Easy bit first for our glitzy and glamorous night, there will be professional sound and lighting provided by Brian Mundy and his team at BSM Stage Tech, and a bar, in which you wonโ€™t have to buy me a drink because Iโ€™m hosting and I donโ€™t want to slur my words, word my slurs or anything along those silly lines!ย 

It makes us all very proud to announce this wonderful lineup. Devizes own Burn The Midnight Oil will open the eveningโ€™s entertainment. Theyโ€™ve come so far in such a short space of time with their own brand of breezy blues-rock, weโ€™re excited to see them perform.

Our lovable legend George Wilding is a name most of you should know, and heโ€™s coming to play a few songs, of course he is! Award winning Lucas Hardy is coming too. Loved on the Salisbury circuit, Lucas will delight you, for what will be, I believe, his first time playing in Devizes; I could be wrong!

Ben Borrill and Pat Ward, aka Matchbox Mutiny, will be there, the lively Devizes-based duo who never fail to charm. Then thereโ€™s Salisbury-based Joylon Dixon and Rachel Sinnetta – a duo who raised the roof off the Three Crowns recently, but I knew it was coming as Rachelโ€™s supreme vocal range and Joylonโ€™s professional accompanying will enthral all.

Thereโ€™s a champagne supernova trip back to the nineties with The Britpop Boys, renowned for blasting those sing-a-long anthems across the county and beyond.ย 

And hereโ€™s our last big secret exposed, Devizes homegrown indie-rock phenomenon Nothing Rhymes With Orange will polish off the evening. They created a storm locally a few years ago as a teen sensation, the likes of which I claimed to be the โ€œBeatlemania of Devizes!โ€ Now studying together at Bristol Uni, their popularity has spread nationwide. Back home they have inspired a new generation to form bands, and we welcome them back delighted.

Make no mistake, all these acts have had a tremendous year, and deserve to be nominated for awards, as are the many other names hiding in our golden envelopes too. Myself, DJ Mark Anthony and possibly a few guest names will be announcing the winners and runners-up, and these wonderful acts will perform just two or three songs each between the announcements; itโ€™s going to be a show!

A show which, we hope, showcases, highlights and celebrates the wealth of musical talent we have here in Wiltshire, in a manner more celebratory than competitive. While many others and not just those performing have high chances of bagging a trophy, by no means is it exhaustive. There are so many others, producing music, promoting, hosting and creating amazing initiatives to fundraise and to teach, we know this, and I intend to highlight as many as I can at the ceremony, because the list is lengthy enough already to cram into one evening, making it comprehensive is a minefield!

The results of the awards was set by public votes and a panel of expert judges, which we genuinely believe to have been a fair system, causing it to be agonising for us to see the entire county trimmed to this much, but if everyone supports this we hope there will be subsequent years of Wiltshire Music Awards to follow. Years in which we will continuously review in order to improve on.

One point, whilst feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive, one niggly raised was tickets. We have to fund this one way or another. We are asking for sponsorships, many have helped and we thank them. In order to make this work, yes, we are asking everyone who wishes to attend, including those nominated, to buy a ticket, of which we have made as reasonably priced as possible. If you have been nominated for an award within our top ten, you are cordially invited to attend, but along with everyone else we do ask you to please purchase a ticket; there is no other expense asked of you other than this.

As much as we would love to see all the winners and runners-up in person, or a representative on your behalf, on the night to be presented with an award, if you cannot make it due to other commitments we understand, and your award will be given to you at a suitable date thereafter. Important point then: You DO NOT need to attend the ceremony to receive the award if you do not wish to, but please consider that we have to fund this, that we have worked hard on getting this off the ground, and would appreciate your support with it. Wiltshire Music Awards has been created by a genuine team dedicated to the local music scene. Allow me to get all Charles & Eddie on your ass at this conjunction, โ€œwould I lie to you, baby?!!โ€

Stepping Up My Spine; New Nothing Rhymes With Orange Single

Developed in Devizes, blossoming in Bristol, as well as a snazzy new website, indie-punk phenomenon Nothing Rhymes with Orange released their next single, and itโ€™s stepping up their spines … apparently!

A narrative of pending infatuation in the hope the feeling is mutual, Stepping Up My Spine is instantly lovable, projecting a more lenient and ubiquitous indie-pop sound than the bandโ€™s raw punkier past; a direction they seem to have been progressing towards with each new release.

I cite many local bands like Talk in Code and Atari Pilot, reflecting a national indie trend to return us to an eighties pop-rock vibe, and this follows suit, but only slightly. It retains the โ€œreal instrumentsโ€ rock ethos theyโ€™ve sworn to uphold, thereโ€™s no electronica influence, thus maintaining the edge we know them for. Letโ€™s call it a natural progression rather than a desire to follow a trend, not forgoing itโ€™s still stylised to their sound and is bound to appease their maturing fans.

If weโ€™ve keenly watched Nothing Rhymes With Orange and their devoted fanbase evolve and proliferate, this new single reflects and preserves that continuation. And long may it be so!

A Chat With Nothing Rhymes With Orange; Goodbye Devizes, or Chow For Now?!

Devizes-own indie-pop-punk youth sensation Nothing Rhymes With Orange smashed the Exchange on Friday as a farewell to their local fanbase. They pursue a music course together at Bristol Uni; but is this goodbye forever, or just Chow for Now? (there’s a pun there, but only for ardent fans!) I met them at their rehearsal the day before to ask this, chat about their past, prospects, breakfast cereal intake, and Jennifer Anistonโ€ฆ.

If you noted new songs on Saturday, why one was named Jennifer, if you observed the song Manipulation, once used as an encore, was pushed to the middle of the set, or if you’re generally wondering how they’ll cope living and studying together in one house, all will be answered!

Background first. A couple of years is all it’s taken Nothing Rhymes With Orange to build a phenomenon locally, the likes I once compared to The Hoax thirty years ago. I quoted myself to nightclub owner Ian James, who agreed, reminiscing about the Hoax playing Jools Holland’s show. They may not have reached that level yet, but this present conjunction is the make-or-break period. Many school bands fold here, as life takes them in different directions. Ergo, key to gauging their thoughts is to cast their minds to the beginning and discover how close knit they are.

So once we established the original lineup of frontman Elijah Easton, guitarist Fin Anderson-Farquhar, drummer Lui Venables, and bassist Ivor Ritson formed NRWO at Devizes school, Ritson being replaced by Sam Briggs soon after, I wondered if they were friends beforehand. โ€œWe all knew โ€˜ofโ€™ each other,โ€ Sam and Lui confirmed, โ€œkind of knew each other separately from Lavington,โ€ Fin added. โ€œBut then we didn’t talk to each other!โ€ Sam completed. Elijah agreed, stating heโ€™d known Lui since about twelve years old, โ€œbut we didn’t speak until I was about sixteen,โ€ when they both joined another band.

Sam brought it to present day, โ€œif youโ€™d have asked us at the start, like five years ago, if you’d all be living in the same flat togetherโ€ฆ.โ€ Which bought a round of laughs, I believe Lui bantered about Sam. โ€œI would have been like, what are you talking about?!โ€ Sam completed.  Youngest in the band, Fin, reminisced, โ€œme and Sam used to play in a band together, when I was in year 7 and he was in year 9,โ€ then added โ€œnarcolepsy!โ€ Iโ€™m uncertain if thatโ€™s the name of the band, or if he suffers sleep disorder!

Theyโ€™re venturing to Bristol to study the same music course, residing at the same residence. Sam pointed out last year ago thatโ€™s the furthest theyโ€™d gigged. โ€œThis year we’ve done everywhere compared to last year.โ€ Story checks out, alongside many festival bookings, they also made first steps in London, โ€œyeah, Camden in two weeks,โ€ Sam replied. But when they get there, and people don’t know them, how does it compare to being in Devizes with fans singing back to them? And which do they prefer?

As harmonious as they perform, they agreed they love playing both, Elijah complementing, โ€œwhen you go to these places and then you see people enjoying your music as well, that’s a whole other experience.โ€

Sam exampled a gig at Bathโ€™s Komedia, balancing the two, โ€œthat was half and half. Some people at the front who knew us. But then there was about 500 other people, which was mental!โ€

On the potential pressures of communal living I used an example; an occasion when I woke up one morning to discover the pasty Iโ€™d planned to take to work had a bite taken out of it, and was placed inconspicuously back into the fridge!

Fingers for such inconsiderate tomfoolery was immediately pointed to Elijah, with milk! He confessed heโ€™s on about seven bowls of cereal a day! โ€œBut I buy them,โ€ he reasoned. โ€œI think that’s the difference. When we were at the start of Sixth Form, I didn’t really know what I was going to do,โ€ he furthered, โ€œand I didn’t know I was going to Bristol. I had no idea what I was going to do with it.โ€

Sam added, pointing to Fin, โ€œI think I was the only one of us three, and maybe you, who knew you were going to do music at college, maybe…โ€

โ€œYeah, because I have no other option,โ€ Fin complemented!

Sam continued, โ€œI was already going to do that before I even got in the band together, I injected that into you a little bit when I turned up.โ€

โ€œI think now we’re just throwing ourselves all in,โ€ Elijah said, โ€œabout two years ago, we were doing it and not sure what we were going to do.โ€ There was a mutual agreement it was because, โ€œwe love it.โ€

Maybe they can deal with subtle musical differences, but when it comes down to breakfast cereal, that could be the limit which pushes it over the edge! Yet when citing their musical influences, they all wanted to say the Fontaines, even when I first opened the door to see Elijah bouncing around the hall with his guitar, Sam sitting picking his like it was made from diamond, Fin with the expression of motivated concentration, and Lui holding it together on the drums, it was like a gig without the audience, and all these elements indicates mutual appreciation for their common goal, drives an instinctive pledge, a motivation to bond and therefore to work harmoniously, and hard.  As Elijah expressed, โ€œwell, it’s like we’re brothers now.โ€

While the guys were taking the interview seriously, there I was back on pastry products, implementing an unwarranted light-hearted angle, joking on the Greggs steak bake falling apart lyric from their song Monday, was his own fault for going to Greggs. Yet in this I was pondering those amusing themes of pitiful everyday scenarios like Lidl Shoes too, as all good punk should, against the balance of romantic themes, and this brought about how they tackle cliches in pop when creating a song, and methods they use to compose them.

โ€œI’ll probably come up with some lyrics,โ€ Elijah revealed, โ€œif thereโ€™s a lyric that is unbearably cliche or, obviously, there’s something in it that you could make fun of or compare to another songโ€ฆ If we make a song that sounds like a YouTube montage, one of us will bring it up, and bluntly say this sounds cringe. We just get rid of that. Looking back on our old songs, we sort of did. If you think Manipulation, when I listen back to that now, I think it’s a bit cliche, but part of cliche people still have a love for.โ€

Manipulation was their crowd-pleaser and often used as the encore, I had previously noted it had been pushed to the middle of the setlist for tomorrowโ€™s gig.

Sam theorised, โ€œthereโ€™s a familiarity in cliche. In some sense you can find beauty in it โ€˜coz you can try hard to avoid a clichรฉ, and write with an ambiguous sense about something, but people still need to understand it, and I think itโ€™s easy to go away from what people know. You know what you’re thinking, other people don’t. The hardest part is the balance of trying to write something people can understand and connect with as well as not thinking it’s cliche. That’s the difficult art to master.โ€

Do they have a template when creating songs, or do they sporadically come together naturally? โ€œThey’re all different, really,โ€ Elijah answered, โ€œwe all do instrumentally. I’ll think of some lyrics, but it can change from song to song. The recent ones, we’ve been coming up with loads of new ones, and the new format is, we’ll think of some lyrics, we’ll cook it quietly, maybe get the first product ready, and then get the whole band in and finish it into this final product.โ€

Eiljah praised Samโ€™s input. โ€œAnother thing that’s changed is having Sam in the band, because we’ve written differently compared to when we wrote Manipulation and songs like that and didn’t have Sam in the band. Sam’s changed the dynamic again with how the template is, and now we’ve got him playing guitar, we’ve got like three songs greatโ€ฆ.โ€

Fin added, โ€œwhen we started, we were sitting down and going, โ€˜we need to write a song,โ€™ now itโ€™s like, ooh, a new song come up, letโ€™s do that, it’s less sitting down and going, โ€˜we are writing a song right now.โ€™โ€

I could sense professionalism establishing through experience and understanding the natural passage of creativity is to recognise and develop when inspiration strikes. The new songs are patently more skilled than previous three-minute punker blasts, to concentrated and prolonged instrumental sections akin to prog rock, yet retaining edge, NRWO are crafting a unique style and are united in perfecting it. The gig at the Exchange confirmed this.

Sam said, โ€œthat’s the most important thing to stay with when you’re writing a song. It’s to not write a song because you need a song, but it’s to write a song because you want to write a song. We’ve done it before. You sit down and you’re like, oh shit, we’ve run out of ideas. We’ve played all these songs a thousand times. Let’s write something new, but 99% of the time nothing comes out of that. It’s more likely to come out of just sitting down and you’re jamming or you’re sitting in your room.โ€

Elijah added, โ€œFor me, you know, the song starts as an emotional output, experience. We’ll have a week of not trying to write anything, and you have like, a shit day or, you go to a party or something and then, suddenly, you wake up about 3:00 in the morning, write this song and then go back to sleep! And then I’ll wake up in the morning. I’ll send Sam a voice-note on my phone singing.โ€ Like the song Monday, I reasoned, that happened, didnโ€™t it? โ€˜I’m having a typical Monday, write a song about it!โ€™

โ€œIt’s interesting the links you can find,โ€ Sam responded, โ€œEli might have written some lyrics, and then a month later I’ve wrote some guitar parts, and I’ll send it to him. What I was feeling at the time I wrote that guitar part was the same as what he was feeling when he wrote some lyrics another time. And those two things end up being a song.โ€

โ€œI think we’re sometimes technologically on a wavelength as well,โ€ Elijah followed with, โ€œwe’ll literally write a song on WhatsApp, we’ve done that on voicemail!โ€

Thinking this has all gone rather serious, I asked the guys, โ€œwhoโ€™s in it for the music? Whoโ€™s in it for the chicks? And who’s a bit of both?!โ€ And you should realise I cannot divulge full details, but some decided on otherโ€™s behalf, few suggested they were spoken for, few opted for both, but when it returned to seriousness, the music was the overall winner.  โ€œI’m definitely in it for the music,โ€ Elijah claimed, then professed to writing a song about his fixation for Jennifer Aniston, whoโ€™s erm, four years older than me, โ€œwhen she was in Friends,โ€ he clarified! Fin hoped Jennifer might marry him off, but they performed the song at the Exchange, none of the female fans seemed to fuss!

Nothing Rhymes With Orange at Devizes Street Festival

We moved swifty onto the course at Uni. โ€œWe’re almost all doing the same thing,โ€ Fin explained, but stressed there was differences. โ€œThere’s production,โ€ Elijah added, โ€œturning it from live music into songs, how to record and how to get all the right equipment and recording settings.โ€

โ€œIt sounds like all you’re going to be doing is playing guitar or drums or whatever,โ€ Fin informed, โ€œbut it’s getting bookings, arranging gigs. There’s also business and event management in it as well. Yeah. So it’s kind of it’s the performance and โ€˜around itโ€™ as well as like just standing and playing shows.โ€

โ€œWhich is pretty good because I mean, we’re kind of been doing it for a year!โ€ conveniently led me onto my next question, if they could put forward what theyโ€™ve already achieved as a project? Elijah scrubbed the โ€˜homeworkโ€™ idea but welcomed the thought they would โ€œhelp us achieve more and bigger opportunities, links into festivals and meeting new people and into new studios.โ€ Just being in Bristol alone is beneficial to this, surely?

โ€œWe started to struggle recently with the fact that there’s only so much you can gain from being in a little town,โ€ Sam expressed, โ€œthough itโ€™s been nice.โ€ This took us on the angle of finding venues wanting original music over cover bands. โ€œThat’s the thing,โ€ he continued, โ€œyou often get, โ€˜ooh, can you play covers? Which is fine. What’s been good, is to get such a strong fan-base. It’s been easy because there’s not much else around.โ€ Using a gig from May, at the Three Crowns in Devizes, where the usual requirement is cover bands, such is the reputation the boys have attained, fans will sing their songs back to them in much the same way classic covers will evoke.  

โ€œYeah, it’s just brilliant,โ€ Elijah smiled. โ€œWe met loads of people, had amazing gigs in Devizes. I’d like to think this is the start; we’ve got this band now, and we know what we want to sound like, we know what we want to play like, and we know how we want to perform. So we’re just taking the same thing, and the main goal is trying to get it as big as possible, which is a bit crazy! Crazy, but I think the whole thing is a bit crazy, because if you’d have told me and Lui like what, five years ago, we’d even beโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Luiinterrupted, โ€œitโ€™s mental where weโ€™ve comeโ€ฆ.โ€

And it is. I asked of their influences, but rather they concentrated on upcoming guitar bands like Wunderhorse, found solace in the smaller stages at Reading Festival, and stuck to their guns of analogue guitar music rather than experiment with tech. I pushed them on synths and backing tracks. โ€œI don’t think we necessarily want it for ourselves,โ€ Elijah said, โ€œbut I think it’s inspiring to see a band going into mainstream with just their guitars and nothing else because I think it’s rare now.โ€

Fin expanded, โ€œa lot of the people in the top ten are just one person,โ€ and we spoke of the depletion of mainstream bands. โ€œA randomly inspiring one, because I could list 1000 bands which inspire me,โ€ Sam added, โ€œthat’s the obvious thing to say, but besides that, like Reading the other day, we saw Georgia Smith, and itโ€™s cool to see, not thatโ€™s inspiring our music, but to see there’s a band playing behind her. If you listen to her on Spotify, there’s garage beats and it’s all produced and processed stuff; that’s coming round a bit more as well. You see these people who traditionally would have a backing track and a microphone, coming out with band behind them. Which is really cool as well, on the basis, one; it gives you different points of view on what you could go to as a band later down the line, and also the fact that there’s more room for itโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s good to see music live,โ€ Elijah prompted a chat about smaller gigs versus the mainstream. โ€œI will always love loads of fans, always,โ€ he suggested, โ€œwhen you see like all those faces out in front of you, and it’s like geez!โ€

We spoke of naturally maturing a sound but being uniformed against selling out or diversifying your style, ending with me supposing thereโ€™s a formula you stick to for however long that roller coaster rides.

โ€œIf you change in the right way, you can never be wrong,โ€ Elijah replied, โ€œwe’ve probably got an album of songs now that we’d all be happy recording and releasing. But if we did another one, we stick to the same formula, but say, a third album, normally people get bored of it.โ€

Sam added, โ€œthere’s changing in style, which can degrade a band potentially,โ€ but turned the focus onto โ€œa loss of energy,โ€ for the flailing attention of the public on a band. Sam figured it wasnโ€™t the change in style of a band, โ€œbut if you don’t retain that energyโ€ฆ.one thing you shouldn’t do is not change your style and try and stick to the same thing, if none of you want to do it, because then it’s just going to sound like you don’t want to do it. And I think, personally for me, and otherโ€™s might feel differently but I find it more important if you needed to do a little change in style to promote the fact that you like what you’re doing now, I feel like that’s better and I think to an audience that’s better conveyed if someoneโ€™s enjoying themselves on stage playing what they like. That’s better to see than someone playing what you want but not enjoying it.โ€

But Iโ€™m going to twist the narrative to influences, because I believe the lads have been a contributor to encouraging younger locals to practise and form bands too, and wanted to ask them if they had any advice for them. Iโ€™m unsure how true this is, they suggested they wasnโ€™t aware of it, but were happy to hear of it. But the advice was definite and unified; โ€œdon’t give up.โ€ โ€œYeah, just do it.โ€ โ€œIf you wanna do it, do it. It’s clichรฉ, butโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œEven if you got no idea what you want to do,โ€ Eljah added, โ€œif you like something and you’re enjoying it, just do it! Because otherwise you can’t just be miserable if you’re not doing it. If you listen to people who say, oh, that’s terrible, don’t do that, stop, stop playing, what are you guys doing? Yeah, there’s no one to be doing anything, if everyone just listened to them, youโ€™ve just gotta enjoy yourself!โ€

It seemed to me weโ€™ve a lovable, carefree frontman, lavishing in the moment, rightfully, against Sam, the articulate analysist, pinning their thoughts, and the whole band are tight, hardworking and motivated; thatโ€™s a winning combo. Sam added, โ€œdon’t compromise your originality for the sake of other people, I think is the biggest thing. Because at that point you’re enjoying yourself. And that takes me back to what I said earlier on, yeah? A band enjoying yourself is a band in its best place.โ€ And this made a perfect summary of NRWO, our town should be proud of what these guys have attained, but the killer question is after such a great gig at the Exchange, is this us parting ways, or just Chow for Now?!

Nothing Rhymes With Orange

โ€œThe main thing is we’ll be back,โ€ Elijah promised, and went off rambling slightly! If I know anything about student life, theyโ€™ll be back when they run out clear underwear! But when they do, Confucius say, Nothing Rhymes With Orange will have attained vast advances beyond the sphere of knowledge here in Devizes, and if the Exchange gig was more refined than ever before, their return will be something else! Until then, we at Devizine wish them all the best with their studies and lives in Bristol; if you can call making rock music a study, I call it shirking!!  That Ain’t workin’!!

My Complaint About Devizesโ€™ Full-Tone Festival!

Chief organiser of the Full-Tone Festival, Jemma Brown has always been high on my list of local folk of admiration, but went a notch higher Sunday upon delivering a sly quip on stage, in retaliation to a lone keyboard warrior inanely slating the festival on Facebook, while the majority of locals, and visitors from afar, basked in the sunshine and glory of what was the ultimate, (and possibly final of this kind,) showcase of our fantastic homegrown Full-Tone Orchestra, their momentous accomplishment, and all the gorgeous gubbings which went with it!

I was sunbathing on a Muck & Dunder deckchair at the time, enjoying one of their Piรฑa Coladas, the like only they seem to know how to create this side of the Atlantic Ocean, and a hearty chuckle impulsively launched from my cake hole. Oh my, the audacity of the ranting warrior caused a desire in me to march that silly sausage down to the breath-taking stage, allowing them to observe, even if momentarily, a sixty-piece orchestra harmoniously labouring sublimely, while a local youth sings their heart out at the most memorable, prestigious, and significant opportunity of their lives so far, to the tears of joy from their mum in the audience, overwhelmed with pride, and the smiles from those enjoying it, then ask this ranting nobody to confirm their complaint was not driven solely by selfish jealousy!

A neighbour of mine has a tendency to rev his motorbike in his garden. I cannot fathom why he needs to do this, neither appreciate the noise, but to ramble on about it on social media isn’t going to achieve anything but further verbal conflict. All I know is when you’re within the range of that stage, the divine acoustics immerse you, and even if it’s not your cuppa, you cannot deny the magnitude of the moment, just one weekend of it was all that was ever asked, the musical might of something you rarely get in Devizes, or anywhere for that matter.

Then, you turn away at your own free will, and note though it may have appeared so, you are not trapped in the Royal Albert Hall, you’re still on the familiar Green in Devizes, and deckchairs surrounds you like a day in a park, teetering with locals, spellbound and appreciating said moment. That is the magic of the Full-Tone Festival; go grab yourself a G&T or a Rowdy Cow ice cream, maybe get your face painted, return whenever you feel like it. It’s neither a sitting concert because of the freedom to come and go, nor a day in the park, because there’s a mahoosive and effective seamless programme of wonderful and varied music waving across the site; it is unique, iconic, and symbolic of everything great about Devizes.

All comes at a price, though, is another I hear plenty. Comparatively not so. Look around you, it’s over the pound mark for a Crunchie bar in a petrol station, and your average festival or a two-hour pop star’s gig will triple the price tag of Full-Tone’s three day extravaganza, if not more. You can only reasonably complain if your ears and eyes are shut.

Look! Look at that extravagant stage, wonder how many lines the technicians are juggling, watch the procession of musicians coming and going from the stage akin to the precision and order of an antโ€™s nest, though in pretty frocks! Consider every sidestall and those relentlessly working to serve you, the security, the first aid, the unison of everything coming together as it did, is both costly and executed with such professionalism I cannot fault it neither reason why anyone else would complain; it would be insanity to do so. Even conductor Anthony Brown waving his baton around for two solid days is enough to sympathise with any repetitive strain injury heโ€™s likely to have developed!

Though I must say again, it was a shame it clashed with the Devizes Scooter Rally, an event also dear to my heart. In such, there were large chunks of both I missed in a desperate attempt to attend the two. I missed the Friday night, when Jemmaโ€™s Devizes Dance Academy replayed their musical Six, accompanied by the fantastic Ruby Darbyshire and Devizes indie popsters Nothing Rhymes With Orange, but console myself safe in the knowledge based on past experience, this would be a guaranteed chicken dinner.

There were so many elements I sadly missed. I know our prodigy Jess Self knocked it out of the Green with Annieโ€™s Tomorrow, but I was made up by catching Six performers Ruby Phipps and Lisa Grimeโ€™s sublime solos during the James Bond theme section. Amidst the pro singers, these local youths held their own, and walked nervously but magnificently through it like it was butter on hot toast. There was the jazz big band on Sunday to make up for missing a Beatles tribute duo, and again, Talk in Code I know wouldโ€™ve smashed it.

Thereโ€™s simply too much to put every detail into words, but as an overall assessment based on what I witnessed or was gutted to be told how great what I missed was, The Full-Tone Festival again was a spectacular community event on a scale Devizes arguably hasnโ€™t seen since the Boto-X, and the Green looked once again as full as the first paid Full-Tone Festival was three years ago. It will be a shame to see the Green fallow next year, but we look forward to the prospect of it returning in whatever different shape it’ll be.

Notwithstanding the financial gain from visitors to the town and local businesses this attracts, alone for itโ€™s sheer capacity for not only providing a showcase for the orchestra, which will again venture out to the cities to perform at their prestigious venues, and attract the big names within the theatrical, classical and opera to grace our town, but also for showcasing upcoming local talent, Full-Tone receives no complaint from me, (the headline was just a sneaky clickbait trap, ha-ha!) Neither could I justify writing a single negative word about it. If I had to, it would be that we cannot do it bimonthly!

It was, as it has been each time, a fantastic event, and is loved by so many. Look again at dancers dancing, somehow, to the Chariots of Fire theme, kids in fairy wings, the old fellow napping in a deck chair with a bucket hat over his faceโ€ฆlook and take heed of everyone, enjoying themselves โ€ฆ.my hat would come off to everyone involved, if it didnโ€™t risk a sunburned bald patch!

Oh, go on then, everyone involved deserves a factor 50 sunblock, because you shine so bright!

See, Iโ€™m done and dusted with whinging; yep, that satirical rant column from many years ago, that I ask Jemma if she remembers, upon my request for more ammo, how she replied, rather I could highlight the positive things happening in town, and how that ended up with me meeting them at a rehearsal for a newly formed orchestra in Rowde school hall? Not that Iโ€™m blaming anyone for Devizine, I’ll take that rap(!!), more so thinking, wow, how far Full-Tone has come from that acorn, and how I’ve followed that inspirational progression.

FullTone Festival’s Youth-Supporting Extra Day Announced

As if the FullTone Festival isnโ€™t exciting enough for Devizes, the Town Council has allowed them an extra day, on the Friday 26th Julyโ€ฆ..

Seeing as everything should be set up and ready to roll for Saturday morning, it seemed a shame not to make use of this iconic stage and tech, so an extension to the festival has been added, with live music from 6pm, and it supports local youth talent.

Six: Teen Edition by Devizes Music Academy

Though FullTone stresses it does all depend on advance ticket sales, for both events. Tickets for the Friday on its own are ยฃ20, or ยฃ10 for under 18. If you buy your festival tickets together with the Friday you will receive a discount code for 20%, if you have already bought tickets for The Fulltone Festival, email jemma@fto.org.uk who will send you the code. The cut off date for this additional Friday is the 30th June, so make sure youโ€™ve booked it by then.

Fulltone Festival 2023 Day Two

You should note, this fifth year of the Fulltone Music Festival will be the last one in its current form. Iโ€™ve personally had this contemplation for a while; as the FullTone Orchestra branches out, playing the cities and big towns, as it has been, surely itโ€™s inevitable that the magic will rub-off with audiences further afield and theyโ€™ll come to Devizes for the festival if there are to be ones in the future; fingers, toes crossed. Spending their cash here on hotels, restaurants and shops is a great thing for the town, and reason enough to support it.

But if my humble reasoning, and two days already sussed with guests like opera legend Carly Paoli, We Will Rock You star Kerry Ellis and Ricardo Afonso, indie popsters Talk in Code, a Beatles tribute and more orchestral concerts than Anthony can shake his shaky baton at, isnโ€™t enough to entice you, note the Friday has local punker heroes Nothing Rhymes With Orange from 7pm, followed by Devizes Music Academyโ€™s inaugural showcase Six: Teen Edition, replayed from sell-out dates at the Corn Exchange back in April.

Iโ€™m told the historical Gen Z party play performance, of which you can read about HERE, will have the same young cast as last time, Ruby Phipps, Amelie Smith, Jess Self, Kelsey Husband, Mia Jepson and Lisa Grime. Alongside Southampton Youth Orchestra opening the festival on the Sunday, we love that FullTone are giving young people a massive platform to perform at this, what could sadly be, the final Fulltone as it currently stands.

Obviously I think they should give me the last encore of the Sunday so I can perform my interpretation of Nessun Dorma in the style of Luciano Pavarotti, as I regularly do in the shower. But as its competence and calibre is largely debatable, usually by my kids trying to study in the next room and the neighbourโ€™s howling dog, I will understand if they decline the offer. Imagine, if you will, as I can see it now, me on that colossal stageโ€ฆ.. โ€œTramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All’alba vincerรฒ, vincerรฒ, vincerรฒ!โ€ Then, mic-drop, bath towel drop, whatever you think the ticket price is worthโ€ฆ..maybe, or no, perhaps just leave it to the professionals and keep this exclusively as a shower performance? It will, after all, be an amazing weekend without it, really!

Homecoming Gig for Nothing Rhymes With Orange at the Three Crowns Devizes

Friday evening in the liveliest of Devizes pubs, The Three Crowns, with Devizes best upcoming band, Nothing Rhymes With Orange pulling a two hour set out of the hat like a magician pulls a rabbit out of theirs. Surely a perfect match and an unmissable occasion; but, ah, shoot, did I do a cidered-up speech? Thereโ€™s vague recollections of it this morning. Please accept my apologies!!

Something of a homecoming for the boys, with recent gigs at Bristolโ€™s Louisiana, Bathโ€™s Komedia, and the Gunners in London, and forthcoming dates ranging from the New Forest Rag-City Festival to Trowbridge Festival, only returning here for FullTone. Theyโ€™re getting the bookings, gig bunnies of Devizes know why.

Changing from Saturdayโ€™s usual live music slot for the Three Crowns to a Friday mayโ€™ve reduced footfall a smidgen, but just as my arm was twisted, many sought the rare opportunity to see how theyโ€™re fairing in the fame, for free. Their devoted Gen Z fan base front and centre, millennial regulars taking up the support trench and anyone older in reserve, save for a few breaking rank, illustrating to those younger how it was done in their day; it was a mixed bunch but plentiful and hospitable, there only to enjoy themselves, and you know NRWO will deliver this.

The date change was to fit in an audition gig on Saturday for the Pilton Stage, a subsidiary of Glastonbury Festival, of which we wish them the very best of luck. In fact, I did wish them such while they were tuning, whereupon frontman Elijah Easton acknowledged precautions to preserve his voice for tomorrowโ€™s big day, and I looked doubtful at him replying, โ€œyeah, right, thatโ€™s not going to happen, is it?!โ€ This contest today is one tough cookie, crossing fingers and toes may not be enough, but come what may, as I believe I said in my slobbering speech, this hometown loves and supports these lads, ergo, they wouldnโ€™t halfheartedly perform to them least anyone. 

Because, and hereโ€™s the deal breaker; with over a year on a pedestal, this youthful quartet of indie-punk-pop still revels in the spotlight and this jubilant enthusiasm reflects onto an audience and reverberates throughout. It makes for a positive atmosphere, a benchmark for a memorable gig. And that is exactly what happened last night at the Three Crowns, a pub usually encouraging acts to perform covers but neednโ€™t for this gig, as the passion these boys deliver has their fans here singing back their originals to them as if they were classic covers. Especially when the Greggs steak bake falls apart. 

It was a glorious occasion, the tremendous night I never doubted. Nothing Rhymes With Orange open a two-hour set, time was on their hands to play through every single theyโ€™ve produced to date, maybe try some new ones, and covers made the remainder. Blink 182, Kings of Leon, and particularly Arctic Monkeys got the Orange makeover, and there were some especially interesting smooth ambient breaks teetering on prog-rock. Yet it is rare even with a two hour set, for these boys to lower the bpm; itโ€™s uptempo yet paced, but nonchalant rather than all out fury, therefore of universal appeal.

A telltale sign of said passion for their labour came at the finale, when the band didnโ€™t want it to end anymore than the fans screaming for more. It was lead guitarist Fin Anderson-Farquhar who looked at me as I tried to fanboy my way to the microphone, that they had run out of songs to play. Therefore it was up the band to, tongue-in-cheek, knock up the archetypal Oasis cover.  

I donโ€™t know what I needed to say so desperately, but I felt I needed to say something about wishing them the best of luck for todayโ€™s audition, to rouse the crowd and let them hear how the local fans support them, because they thoroughly deserve it in my book. Then, probably due to fatigue at an exhausting show of epic proportions, they idiotically left me alone on the microphone!! It was there where I thought Iโ€™d convey my compassion to local blues heroes the Hoax over thirty years ago, because I believe that was a Devizes phenomenon then, and we are witnessing the next right now.

Elijah, Fin, bassist Sam Briggs, drummer Lui Venables, are tighter as a band than ever before, as they journey to college together, they take with them a comradeship, and they take a shared passion for their music, and it is something which continues to improve; last night proved that on their hometurf, superbly.

All Catโ€™s Eyes for Nothing Rhymes With Orangeโ€™s New Single

Firstly, to clear up any confusion, as I know I was, a little, and I also accept it doesnโ€™t take much these days, Devizesโ€™ finest musical export since The Hoax, Nothing Rhymes With Orange will play a homecoming gig at The Three Crowns on the Friday 24th June, and not as previously advertised on the Saturdayโ€ฆ.

Reason being is symbolic of the monumental progress this young band is making nationally; on the Saturday theyโ€™re at the third heat of this yearโ€™s Pilton Stage party in Glastonbury, the winners of which will go on to share the stage with a major headliner in front of 8,000 people on Worthy Farm in September, thatโ€™s all!

Here at Devizine Towers weโ€™ve got all fingers and toes crossed for the guys, itโ€™s a tough cookie, but we look forward to catching up with them on Friday. The narrative is elementary though noteworthy, the post-festival blues of confusing mental bedlam over a fleeting romance, and coming to terms with it all when homebound; itโ€™s convincing, I get the inkling theyโ€™ve been there.

Yet itโ€™s the professionalism of a lively style defined here which impresses, having watched these Devizes lads progress from the levels of fun yet amateur punky knockouts like Chow For Now. And itโ€™s all contained within a relatively short space of time whereby each single is a moonwalk to initiating a universal style.

If the early singles like Chow and Manipulation fuelled a local fanbase of peers, Cats Eyes will play the same part in enthusing the big kahunas of the music industry, and if not, I want an inquiry as to why not. These songs theyโ€™ll undoubtedly look back on as stepping stones, yet while thereโ€™s a modification to a growing professional trend which sounds to me retrospective eighties indie-pop, the like I hail bands like Talk in Code for reverbating, their rawer punker influences arenโ€™t completely saturated here. It doesnโ€™t feel like selling out, it feels like a natural progression to a permeating and accomplished sound, which will equally not disappoint fans but amass newer ones too.

If weโ€™ve always been impressed with Nothing Rhymes With Orangeโ€™s insatiable ability to energetically harmonise, itโ€™s evident here in abundance too. Theyโ€™ve mastered the hook, and taking it to a bridge, they detonate the pop formula with indie goodness, something which only gets better each time; Catโ€™s Eyes makes another positive leap forward.

The band have been consistently gigging across the South West at festivals and niche music venues since they met in a secondary school, and have been championed by many local radio stations including BBC Introducing who have featured two of their tracks. With a summer tour announced they’ll be playing a range of headline and support gigs right across Wiltshire and on to Hampshire, Bristol, Reading and London. 

But while itโ€™s great to see them heading out, you know when they arrive back in Devizes, the party is on, and fans will be chanting their lyrics back to them; the highest accolade aside a blinding review from me, naturally!!

New Nothing Rhymes With Orange Single

Friday is over, I’m a day late to the party, but there’s a new single from Devizes-own Nothing Rhymes With Orange, and you’ve not heard anything like this from the boys before…..

Starter for ten, Friday is Over sounds four-five notches more professional than anything which went before, a result of 91 Studios in Newbury and a push to obtain a crisper sound for radio by our very own skateboarding Vernon Kay, James Threlfall! (I know, it probably bugs him when I call him that!) But tech is nothing without the skill to use it to your advantage, and from the off Friday is Over twinkles with a surprising eighties synth-pop intro. There’s retrospective elements of what local indie bands like Talk in Code, the Dirty Smooth and Atari Pilot aim to achieve, but not without the archetypical NRWO sound in the forefront.

So, Don’t go off thinking the band are the new A-Ha, the guitars roll and Elio’s vocals build to something we’re familiar with, as Nothing Rhymes With Orange fans. Still though, we’re on another level with this, the bridges and hooks, all chartable stuff from our hometown boys; for crying out loud Devizes Town Council, lets a get a statue of these kids in the Market Place, pronto!

If past tunes filled me with hope for them, this one fills me with assurance, knowing how hard they’ve all worked towards this, and pride too, to say we’ve been following and supporting them since day dot. Friday maybe over, but this is the start of a great adventure and we wish them all the best…. take a listen.

Way to Start the Year; Bradford Roots Festival 2024

Hibernating since Christmas, now I feel like a turkey, making up for it, stuffing eighteen bands into eight hours, such is the beauty of Bradford Roots Festivalโ€ฆ..

Impossible to provide detailed analysis of each with such a sizable quota, not without an essay-length review, and there’s the handful I missed. Suffice it to say, every act I witnessed at Bradford Roots Festival was top notch, and locally-sourced, just as we like it here on the De-viz-ine!

Over two years from 2019, our man Andy returned from the annual convention and reported back. I skipped through it and published. I need not doubt his words, dedicating my time writing something else. I wrongly assumed at the time, likely from its name, that the Bradford Roots Festival was a folk festival, rather โ€œrootsโ€ I now believe refers geographically; it’s the music of the here and now. I discovered this for myself attending last year’s and unexpectedly hearing jazz and youthful grunge bands you wouldnโ€™t usually hear at a folk festival!

Open any fire door to the wonderful Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford-on-Avon, and there’s another surprise behind it. The festival is an annual indoor feast of music over four stages, fundraising for the Centre itself, their Zone Club, a musical group for disabled adults, and a chosen charity, this year’s being Parkinson’s support. I like to define it as a convention of local musicians rather than a festival, only because it’s all indoors and winter, but it doubles up as either. Either way you view it, it’s a brilliant event for all ages. For the elders there’s a bar and food options, for the youngest there’s craft rooms, workshops and naturally for a festival in January, ice cream!

You could also see it as a taster for the wealth of musical acts we have on this circuit; youโ€™ll find them performing in our local venues. Some I’ve previously tried and tested, others were new to me, and some essential to check off my ever-growing must-see list.

The latter true of the first, gutted to have been too late for Daisy Chapman at the acoustic Gudeon stage, Jol Rose followed. He’s the Swindon-based Americana soloist I met at a Swindon Shuffle of yore and been meaning to catch perform. Like all others, he didn’t disappoint, despite only catching his finale. Here’s a prolific acoustic magician with the experience under his belt to engage an audience. An open mic hour followed at this stage.

If Jol, though, came as no surprise, Thieves did. My next venture to the Wild & Woolley stage where blues is the order by day, and youth gather for indie by the eve, Thieves were playing an acoustic harmony not unlike the Lost Trades, and hey presto, I’m standing next to the one only Phil Cooper, one third of said Trades! Heโ€™s compere for this stage, and will perform at the bar stage later. As Thieves progressed through a sublime set of bluegrass I likened it more to Concrete Prairie, and of similar quality. I’m staring at the frontman from a distance, thinking, by Jove, thatโ€™s Adam Woodhouse, who I know as a soloist with a penchant for rock n roll covers. This new outfit, Thieves, only formed in June and is barking up his alley, youโ€™d imagine the four-piece to have done this all their life. Adam tells me theyโ€™re playing a Sunday at The Southgate, Devizes, in April, well worth your attention.

The festival breaks for its foyer tradition of Holtโ€™s morris dancers and childrenโ€™s parade, known as the Wassall, then Phil Cooper takes the Bar Stage, kicking off with his own Road Songs, finding time to superbly cover Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Such is diversity on offer, when itโ€™s time for some jazz hey presto, again, Iโ€™ve finally made my way to the Main Stage for The Graham Dent Trio. Jazz pianist with a double-bass player and Nick Sorensen on sax, this is divine melodic invention, contemporary and unique, though I knew what I was letting myself in for, I saw them last year.  

Drag myself away, for Bristol Uni indie four-piece, LilyPetals. New to me, confident youngsters with funky basslines over the archetypal rock, big tick from me. And a tick off my must-see list, Be Like Will on the main stage, a varied strong female-fronted three-piece pub circuit band who used the festival to play through their originals rather than their usual covers to appease a pub audience, which, either way, theyโ€™d accomplish with bells on. The new tune finale was a definite article to how rousing this band can take an audience.

The showstopper though, and itโ€™s a big show to stop, came from Ruby Darbyshire at the Gudgeon. An absolutely spellbinding performance left the crowd in awe as others mingled outside praying someone would leave to replace them; few did. Rubyโ€™s stage presence has drastically improved in a relatively short space of time, her talent to adapt from acoustic folk to jazz scat need not. With just the right balance of originals and covers, she held us in awe, was the only artist to get an encore, and through Sinรฉad O’Connor, Dylan, Bob Marley and Springsteen covers she nailed them all and made them her own. Particularly poignant, Ella Fitzgeraldโ€™s Misty, simply, wow!

Beguiling building layers of goth-rock were sounding from the Wild & Woolley, though, as Bristolโ€™s female-fronted Life in Mono took to the stage. Evanescence in shape, yet solely idiosyncratic, hereโ€™s a euphoric original band to look out for. With Life in Mono indulgently ticked off my must-see, a new one on me rocked the main stage, the steady gypsy-dad-folk of The Mighty Rooster, prior to ensuring I was at the Bar for the unmissable Chippenham folk singer-songwriter, Meg. A passionate and thoughtful young artist, Meg delivers in such a unique yet proficient way I deem it impossible for anyone not to love her.

Such is the tight schedule though, should I need waiver artists weโ€™ve seen and featured before in favour of ones Iโ€™ve yet to catch live? Trowbridge soul artist extraordinaire, Frankisoul is due on the main stage; anticipation brewing from the crowd while the band frustrate themselves with minimal setup times, resulting in a few technical mishaps, would, in any other circumstances be somewhat off-putting, but, fact is Frankisoul is such a character, and such a vibrant and sublime soul vocalist, hiccups were easy to polish over, still, they came up smiling and were my second showstoppers of the festival.       

Clichรฉ is putty in Frankisoulโ€™s hands, if his only cover, Gloria Gaynorโ€™s I Will Survive is so, and they rinsed their originals with gusto and stylish proficiency, even down to a moment of hilarity upon Frankisoul mimicking the coat stage gimmick of James Brown. Itโ€™s these originals which gravitated me towards them, reviewed here, I shivered apprehension comparing him to likes of Luther Vandross, particularly Otis Redding, and yeah, live thereโ€™s a hint of eighties soul, of Kool & the Gang, but now I know he can live up to these.

Meanwhile the wonderful Courting Ghosts were unplugged at the Bar Stage, with their amazing blend of folk-rock, and Melkshamโ€™s finest youth band The Sunnies rocked the Wild & Woolley. One Iโ€™ve been aching to catch, yet I didnโ€™t catch enough of due to Frankisoul gluing me to my seat, if I liken The Sunnies to Devizes-own sensation, Nothing Rhymes With Orange, I think itโ€™s fair to now state, The Sunnies angle slightly to more indie-pop, their originals tinged with a carefree and indeed, sunny-side-of-the-street feel; a blessing to watch, bloominโ€™ marvellous!

With lively function band the Corporations attracting those left standing to the main stage, crowds lessened at the Wild & Woolley, sadly just when the epic finale was due. Yeah, itโ€™s Devizesโ€™ Nothing Rhymes with Orangeโ€™s headliner; those in the know and a few curious punters stayed to observe our hometownโ€™s fever as the boys pulled out their typical energetic and competent show. Evermore is their attraction spreading, with gigs lined up as far as Manchester now, NRWO, Iโ€™ll be banging on about their brilliance for a while yet it seems!

Conclude this now, Worrow, in some manner, youโ€™re sounding boring! I Know, but, over a colossal word-count only teetering on covering all the happenings at Bradford Roots Festival, and only the one day of it too, I struggle to find anything to grumble about. What a way to start the year, Bradford Roots Festival is amazing, the shell, The Wiltshire Music Centre is a blessing to our county, the value for money is righteous, the atmosphere is equable and convivial, and long may it be so.

The longer I gaze in awe at the lineup for this year’s Bradford Roots Festival at the Wiltshire Music Centre the more tempted to break hibernation for an expedition to Bradford-on-Avon I get, even if it means in Robert Falcon Scott style. If it’s Antarctic conditions out there on Saturday 20th Jan, I’m hiring huskies!

Four stages of the crรจme de la crรจme of locally sourced music under one purpose-built roof ensures it’ll be warm inside. Bradford Roots Festival is a who’s who of local talent, more music convention than festival, and I don’t know if they took heed of some suggestions I made or we’re simply singing off the same song sheet, but, just, wowsers!

Frankisoul

One thing before waffling on those I do know, there’s much more that I don’t know, yet, which is equally gurt lush, and hope to shed some light on those once done and dusted. For now though, let’s virtually trek stage-by-stage, kicking off with the main stage. Graham Dent Jazz Trio I caught last year and look forward to, Be Like Will aren’t much after and we love those guys, but Trowbridgeโ€™s upcoming soul hero, Frankisoul is a must for me. Reviewing his debut EP left me at loss for a local comparison, and while I’d never use Otis Redding lightly, such is the strength of Frankisoul’s vocals I did, and that’s the highest compliment I can reward, surely?! Though I’ve yet to catch him live, I’m putting him on a pedestal I’m certain he won’t kick over.

Nothing Rhymes With Orange at Devizes Street Festival

Wild and Woolley stage speaks for itself, Mark Green’s Blues Band are worthy of attention based on last year’s stunning performance. Yet it’s the gen z takeover in the latter half of the day down there which is really going to go off. Foxymoron, Melkshamโ€™s finest The Sunnies, and Devizes homegrown sensation, Nothing Rhymes With Orange, are all must-sees. Nestled between them is Bristol’s Life in Mono, who, though slightly older, I’ve only heard great things about.

Newly formed but brimming with experience and talent, Courting Ghosts are unplugged as a finale at the bar stage, which will be something else. It’s also grand to see one third Lost Trader Phil Cooper on the list, Phil was the mc last year, and one rising acoustic magician I beg you to catch, Chippenhamโ€™s Meg.

There’s another stage I can’t even remember them having last year, The Golden Gudegon, kicked off by Trowbridgeโ€™s incredible Americana artist Daisy Chapman, followed by the impressive force which is Swindonโ€™s Joel Rose, and though the rest are new to me,ย Ruby Darbyshire is rightfully on that list, and I recommend you find the stage for these.ย 

And that’s just Saturday! Though unless I win the lottery, or suddenly invent commercially viable cloning technology within a fortnight, Sunday, I’ll sadly miss it. Though Becky Lawrence, Billy in the Lowground, Karport Collective, and Ed Dyke are the ones I’ll be most sad to have missed.

And there’s my take on it, I’m sure you may have a different opinion and can name drop a whole other set on this stunningly extensive lineup, that’s your prerogative, and I’ll always heed of your recommendations. But one sure thing, Bradford Roots Festival is on, and is a wonderful thing. Fundraising for Parkinsons UK, the Music Centre’s Trust and their inhouse Zone Club, a monthly music-making project supporting the creativity of learning disabled young adults. The Zone Club presents their work on the main stage at 11:30.

Nothing Rhymes With Orange Storm The Southgate

If The Southgate is Devizesโ€™ finest and most reliable pub music venue, it’s usually favoured by an adult crowd. Yet it’s without doubt that Nothing Rhymes With Orange is the most cherished Gen Z band in town. Having not played Devizes since summer, it was a certainty such a free gig wouldย crash the age demographic of the trusty tavern down a notch or three, never a bad thing, though not a given they’d raise its roof, but, they did that tooโ€ฆ

It’s been on the cards for a while. After a long-lost summer Sunday when the band popped in to witness how it’s done, by the expertise of Jon Amor Trio’s monthly residency. Now, being their first time huddled in the infamous alcove, they brought the most diverse entourage we’ve seen at the Gate, and with zest and a righteous sense of confidence, they provided a proficient, high energy show of their unique brand of indie-punk. The atmosphere was fire.

Ageism didn’t turn up, it chose to stay home, cuddling the sensationalised myth blankie of teenage hooliganism other local media will have you believe, for clickbait. The youngest were respectful of the elder regulars, behaved accordingly, the regulars welcomed the youngsters, and surprisingly, behaved too! If Haribo temporarily replaced cider, the Gate issued a statement prior that all under eighteen must be accompanied by an adult, meeting the delicate balance needed. It’s one thing providing a safe space for the fledgling generation to enjoy, and I salute landlords Deb and Dave for this, but another in this economic climate to insure a gig is profitable for a pub through takings at the bar.ย 

Thus it made a most unusual evening at the Gate, one half as the matured yet lively and hospitable establishment it always is, the other town’s teenage fanbase, who wouldn’t usually frequent the place, dancing their socks off and hailing back the lyrics to the group in unison; the benchmark for any band in vogue.

There’s no mistaking the simple notion, Nothing Rhymes With Orange are at a peak right now, locally. How this widens geographically is down to their motivation and commitment, but I, for one, urge those outside our locality to check them out, as the sensation they’re attracting here is akin to Beatlemania. If their stage presence has flourished, their harmony and ability to execute intelligent and often witty narrative in the present, has always been an accomplishment and goal scorer from day dot.

They look like they really want to be there, that’s the ticket, as it reflects on the audience and reverberates equally to their wailing guitars. Frontman Elijah Eastonl is worshipped when he stands amidst the fans, it’s something to behold. The band play on, lead guitarist Fin Anderson-Farquhar covers the riff, splices vocals, bassist Sam Briggs layers it, enthusiastic drummer Lui Venables sets the pace, but more often than not, it’s their unison which compliments Elijah’s spontaneous spotlight moments.

The first half of this show fire-breathing their beloved originals, Monday, Chow for Now, Creatures, with an alternative downtempo take on Lidl Shoes, I felt a little experimentation was afoot, some crashing endings aliken to prog-rock rather than their archetypal punker base. Was this to appease the Southgate regulars or a new avenue for them, I’m unclear, but it was an interesting move.

After Butterflies, the second half was adroit covers heavy, ending with an encore of Manipulation, their most treasured original for audience participation. The boys are back in the studio soon, after having a brief break, and we look forward to hearing what they come out with, because last night at the Gate, they were positively buzzing, a real stocking filler!

Phase Rotate at the Southgate tonight, and leading up to brussel sprout day, Chrissy Chapman as One Trick Pony has a fundraiser on Friday 22nd, Marlborough’s blues aficionados Barrelhouse return on Saturday 23rd, and that’s always an unmissable one.


Nothing Rhymes With Orange Frontman Releases Solo Tune

If the most popular band to come out of Devizes recently, Nothing Rhymes With Orange are really gathering pace and attention nationally, frontman Elijah Easton has turned his hand at a solo singleโ€ฆโ€ฆ

A Californian author friend with her roots in Venezuela once told me about chilli peppers with the opposite effect to the chillis we here take for granted; they cool rather than heat. Good this, Street Lights takes us on a different journey with Elijahโ€™s familiar vocals. Akin to the chilli, if NRWO are heating up right now, this solo single is Newton’s third law, the equal and opposite reaction; this is cool!

To listen to it alongside the NRWO skate-punker outpourings is to listen to Springsteenโ€™s Iโ€™m on Fire alongside Born in the USA. Yeah, so its romance theme isnโ€™t so divergent, but the acoustic-folk-folktronica approach is. But donโ€™t run off spreading rumours of a band break up, though, this is more Careless Whisper, and something Elijah has been working on, self-producing alone whilst theyโ€™re saving pennies for some studio time to record future band tunes. Selected as BBC Introducing in the West Showcase Act, itโ€™s worthy of your ears, and displays the range Elijah is willing to explore.

Box Rocks; Spend August Bank Holiday Monday in Box?

Not a typo, even if my irritating grammar check says it’s so, and not ruling out some might like to spend bank holiday Monday “in a box;” each to their own. But Box Rocks, at the Queen’s Head, in Box is an institution, and this year is looking decidedly temptingโ€ฆ..

Forever a bank holiday Monday thing, Box Rocks actually started on Whitsun in 1994. The idea, concocted over a few drinks between like-minded musicians, was to perform a charity gig on the roof overlooking the gardens and car park at The Queens Head in Box; their very own Apple HQ, Savile Row!

โ€œAfter the first few years,โ€ they tell, โ€œwe were advised that putting musicians and alcohol eight feet in the air was not the best idea, so we moved the stage into the garden at ground level!โ€

In 2002, due to the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, it was shifted to the August Bank Holiday, and due to its blossoming attraction, moved to the carpark, where it remains to this day, with the slogan โ€œ8 bands over 8 hours.โ€

Over the years Box Rocks has raised thousands of pounds for the RUH Forever Friends appeal and other local charities, the past couple raising over ยฃ7,000 for Dorothy House.

But enough of the history, Box Rocks goes ahead come rain or shine, on Monday 28th August this year, itโ€™s a fiver or more donation to the Dorothy House on the gate, no animals except guide dogs, only food and drink purchased on the grounds and under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

And the lineup is looking a little something like this: from 2pm the Phoenix River Band kick off, 3pm is Danni W, whose album we recently fondly reviewed but yet to catch live, Tom Petty homage, Petty Minded from 4pm, a fine choice, sirs, Nothing Rhymes With Orange take the 5pm slot, followed by The Sunnies, indie-punkers similarly taking the Sham by storm, and From Jovi at 7pm, which may/may not be a tribute act!

Nothing Rhymes With Orange Release New Single Monday, on Monday!

Rapping on this today, because Devizes young heroes Nothing Rhymes With Orange unleash their latest catchy banger, Monday, tomorrow, which is coincidently or not, a Monday, and we all know Mondays are a load of old tosh and if we had a half decent government Mondays would be banned by now, and being itโ€™s Monday I doubt I’ll get time to mention it then, because itโ€™s Monday, which is kind of what this indie-punk treat is aboutโ€ฆ..

I could direct the bandโ€™s attention to Smiley Lewis, who prior to The Boomtown Rats, New Order and The Bangles, had a single whinging about Mondays way back in 1954, and note the though the concept is far from new, Nothing Rhymes With Orange are not only the first to reference a Greggs steak bake in a song about Monday, but also, Smiley Lewis or none of the above ever drooled on their mate while sleeping on the bus, as far as history books reveal.

The band tells us the tune has โ€œmore of an indie-punk sound, a step away from the softer indie-rock of previous tracks and weโ€™re exploring this genre with more songs of a similar style.โ€ Though the subtle difference will, and does already, encourage the live audience into a frenzy at the bridge, to consider such may not be as commercially viable is to note it was the track picked up and played by BBC Introducing this month. Canโ€™t blame them really, itโ€™s a brilliant tune.

โ€œThe inspiration for our new single, โ€˜Monday’, came about when we were chatting about the โ€˜Monday morning dreadโ€™,  when you wake up tired and everything goes wrong,โ€ they explain, though you could effectively walk into a lamppost on any other day, you can bet your bottom dollar it will be on a Monday, but Iโ€™m afraid, when it comes to pastries, you get what you pay for, boys; believe me, Iโ€™m something of an expert on them.

Timeworn romance topics can be a stable subject, but something which drops in some light-hearted humour itโ€™s more often than not a chicken dinner, particularly within their genre. I pray you’ll recall Wheatus for Teenage Dirtbag rather than A Little Respect, or Foundations of Wayne for Staceyโ€™s Mom rather than Someone’s Gonna Break Your Heart.

It sure is a great tune, with a lot of work gone into it, despite the festival season in full flight, and the band have certainly been gathering appeal and pushing new geographical boundaries, with 30K streams across all platforms. Still to come, theyโ€™re live on hometown Fantasy Radio from The Crown in Devizes on 24th August, and a couple of summer festivals remain, Honey Fest and Box Rocks. They also play The Pump on 1st September, The Lamb, Marlborough the next day, their self promoted gig at Devizes The Corn Exchange on the 10th, and its onto Moles in Bath, and weโ€™re looking at 15th December for them to make their debut at the trusty Southgate.

FullTone Festival 2026: A New Home

Nothing Rhymes with Orange at Devizes Corn Exchange

Booking Devizesโ€™ most prestigious venue, The Corn Exchange was mighty ambitious for newly formed promoter Lost Monkey Productions, but to say that Nothing Rhymes with Orange was a marvel last night would be an understatement. They completely enthralled the whole hall and captivated the attention of everyone listeningโ€ฆ..

Last night kicked off with OverStory, a band only created earlier this year. They had a mix of exceptional covers and originals which were both extraordinary. They even brought on a female voice, which added diversity and elevated their performance. Their relaxed music created a chilled out mood that the audience enjoyed. You couldnโ€™t tell they only called themselves a band early this year. These boys go to Bath College studying music and call their music phenomenon โ€˜messing around.โ€™ I look forward to seeing Overstory โ€˜mess aroundโ€™ again.ย ย

OverStory then handed the baton to Foxymoron, who exceeded all high expectations. They delivered originals, all with a unique sound that the crowd thoroughly enjoyed. Foxymoron portrayed both great charisma, and a natural ability to perform. Their song โ€˜signsโ€™ was compelling to watch and listen to; I hope they release their music soon. The audience was enchanted with the band and was hanging on to every note. Their fan base is ever expanding with each performance and everyone is hoping to witness their flourishing successes.ย ย

As soon as Nothing Rhymes with Orange walked onto their stage, the audience was buzzing with anticipation. NRWO started their set with their new single โ€˜Butterfliesโ€™ whilst the crowd belted out every word, even though it was only released at the end of May. The dedication of their fanbase to know every lyric truly reflects how NRWO has a committed growing audience, which enjoy both their company and music. They continued their set and continued to amaze all that were there to witness it. They produced an astounding cover of the Kings of Leonโ€™s โ€˜Sex on Fire.โ€™

The place was absorbed by the energy from the audience and the band’s connection with each other. Continuing from that remarkable cover, NRWO performed more originals and unreleased music, which had the audience engrossed in their show. They performed nearly all their released music, including โ€˜Creaturesโ€™ and โ€˜Chow for Nowโ€™ as well as their unreleased song โ€˜Monday,โ€™ which was played on BBC Music Introducing. The fluidity between their own songs and a few covers was incredible and well practised. Their individual performances and characters are starting to develop as well as maturing into a tight band. Their bright guitar, interesting riffs, unique voice and insanely fast and technical drumming gives them an individual sound which separates them from the boy bands of this day in age. The love for their own music and the music of the other performers is projected through the interactions with both. It is clear to see that Nothing Rhymes with Orange appreciate the growth that their band is rightfully getting.

Nothing Rhymes with Orange shows the coming generation of musical talent in an amazing light. They are kind to their fans, respectful of everyone who helps them and show appreciation to any support that they receive. They are not only a band, but friends of the audience, which shows as they feel at home on stage. Coming from a local school, it shows that โ€˜ordinaryโ€™ people can create something which inspires and includes the people around them.  I canโ€™t wait to see what all the bands come up with next.

Nothing Rhymes With Orange at the Barge, and Beyond!

Another quick one from me, to say Devizes upcoming indie band Nothing Rhymes With Orange smashed it out of the park and down the Kennet & Avon all the way to the Barge on Honeystreet last nightโ€ฆ..

Canโ€™t give a full review as I only rocked up with a half-hour to spare, but it was plenty to witness, Nothing Rhymes With Orange are no hometown novelty. Punters at the Barge on Honeystreet were equally enthralled by their dynamic show of originals and the occasional cover. Of which one hailed out their request for an encore should be an original of theirs, which was interesting as it fully projects what weโ€™ve been saying all along about this band; their dedication to creating an exclusive and prototypical sound is primary, yet while their ability to project that to an audience is something theyโ€™re continuously perfecting, the result is sheer exhilarating.

It was at this point then, I stress, Nothing Rhymes With Orange seemed more at home and familiar in these pub venue surroundings than ever before, despite what is a legendary local venue with an historic appreciation for the quirky and unusual, it didnโ€™t phase them to perform confidently and superbly. I left thinking everywhere these young guys go they will imprint their music on those who attended and while they may have amassed a blossoming fanbase here, it will only extend further. But more to the point, it is so thoroughly deserved!

Heading a generational scene and finding time to network within it to showcase others is clearly making an impact, as a group of local youngsters form a new production company called Lost Monkey Productions, who arenโ€™t taking things one step at a time, rather hosting NRWO with Foxymoron and Overstory in support at Devizes most prestigious venue, The Corn Exchange on Friday 14th July.

Nothing Rhymes With Orange have Butterflies

If Lidl Shoes, April’s blast from our aspiring homegrown four-piece indie-punkers, Nothing Rhymes With Orange certainty raised the rafters with energetic enthusiasm, I held subtle solicitude, despite the amusing name, it did only a smidgen to progress the band any further than their mind-blowing debut EP Midsummer. By contrast today’s new single, Butterflies, is a Neil Armstrong sized leap in the maturing direction they need to be heading to attain a mass appeal.

With an infatuation theme, the band express a continuation of narrative relating to Lidl Shoes, yet while maintaining their archetypal jab of youthfulness, Butterflies ventures into a pensive mood, it’s dreamier, swapping guitar distortion and resounding choruses for a softer emotional sound. Don’t run off with Coldplay connotations, it remains punchy enough to warrant influences they cite, like Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and The Wombats, and it lies equally as beguiling as their most celebrated tune to-date, Manipulation.

If the chorus of Manipulation is hailed back at them by fans, Butterflies is clearly in the making to evoke the same effect. It’s instantly loveable, their best work so far, proving as I said since day dot, Nothing Rhymes With Orange are going places.

With this interesting development, I wonder how their predominantly teenage fanbase have responded to this, as they will mature in-line with the band, and should, in theory, relate. Idolised acts of teenage years always rely on this familiarity with the path their fanbase are personally on, and their songs become stories of their own life. Butterflies identifies definitively, calls out to them, it’s an anthem, I tell you!

Frontman guitarist Elijah Easton, drummer Lui Venables, guitarist Fin Anderson-Farquhar and bassist Sam Briggs have cracked it again, furthering a natural development in their sound, and in conglomeration have penned another standout masterpiece; you’d be a fool to yourself for failing to make it down to the mainstage of Devizes Street Festival on Sunday by 2:30pm, where we should join in celebration at the remarkable achievement this young Devizes-based band has made, amidst the selection of international acts on show.

Carsick Pump It!

This evening Iโ€™ve been reminded of a different feeling, something missing in recent years; noisy, energetic, bordering madnessโ€ฆ..

Youthful bands with something to say, a truly incredible gig. Sheer Music Presents Carsick at Trowbridge’s Pump, with Devizes own Nothing rhymes with Orange, and first out Meg, from Trowbridge.

Meg has a great voice and some great original songs. NRWO are a great, bouncy, mosh-friendly, superb band with huge potential for a wider audience.

And Salisbury’s Carsick – holy shit, good band! They reminded me of seeing new wave punk, or laterally The Computers. Clearly the whole assembled crowd of all ages felt the same, a resonance, an energy, a way to make people feel alive.

Instant fan, incredibleโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s been too long since Iโ€™ve seen anyone stand on a balcony, or the drum kit, since I saw crowd surfing or saw so many people having fun in this way.

Pump promoter Kieran J Moore continues to impress and influence me, with bands but also the incredible support he offers a scene that evolves. Nights like this makes me proud to know him. 

I have been told by record store owners, reviewers, many people I needed to see these bands and somehow Iโ€™ve landed on my feet and seen both together. Thank you all of you, amazing gig and wonโ€™t be the last time I see any of you.

Kieran said of the gig, “it’s single handedly more impressive, valuable and important when a band can come to a rural backwater town and blow up a scene, show and venue. Last night, once again, we showed that you don’t need to leave Trowbridge to have the time of your life.”

“Three young, fresh new artists played The Village Pump, and hundred people witnessed something you cannot fake, or throw money at to create. We saw something real, genuine, pure and incredible. It was that simple.”

The Devizine editor, gutted for being unable to make this one(!) wishes to extend this by congratulating all at this fantastic grassroots venue on our doorstep. The Pump continues going from strength-to-strength, last week the subject of a BBC Points West filming, highlighting hostess and trainee sound engineer Megan, as part of her work via The Prince’s Trust. The filming will be broadcast this Thursday 4th May. On our maiden voyage to the Pump, Megan made the perfect host, and her enthusiasm for this opportunity spoke volumes.

Song of the Week: Nothing Rhymes With Orange

I know, I keep missing this supposed weekly feature, no matter how I might promise. I did have one for last week but the dog ate my homework, and, I dunno, procrastination takes control over me like Iโ€™m possessed by lethargy and need of an exorcist like Mr Motivator; whatever did happen to him?!

But it will have to wait for another week, as the Devizes imminent indie-poppers I tip to be the best upcoming local act of the year, Nothing Rhymes With Orange have surprised us with another upbeat cracker aligned with their intramural style of the debut EP Midsummer. Amusingly called Lidl Shoes, which besides the point, can be surprisingly durable as well as affordable(!), this single reaches its bridge like mountain boots, but without the rough grip of what you might expect from the stage-diving gen Z, this is flexible for ageless appreciation, just damn good, constantly improving intelligent punk-pop.

Hometown Gig for Nothing Rhymes with Orange

First one in what I hope to be a series diverting negative local social media hysteria about wayward youths in our area, must be a Devizes-based indie-pop band of young hoodlums with nothing better to do with their time than pick up guitars and drums, practise like crazy, self-promote themselves, and name themselves with a rational band name, like Nothing Rhymes With Orangeโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Even though we have a mountain in Wales called Blorenge, and, the technical term for a sac where spores are made, sporange, all of which they couldโ€™ve Googled, but perhaps were too busy becoming the band the best upcoming band in the South West, Salisburyโ€™s Carsick, cite as the best upcoming band in the South Westโ€ฆ. maybe!

Whatever the reason for them overlooking these obscure words which do rhyme with orange, the guys are really at the top of their game right now, something we all should tip our hats to. Since fondly reviewing their EP last November, theyโ€™ve ventured off to perform in Bristol, Bath, and Trowbridge, as well as Chippenhamโ€™s Take the Stage contest. Iโ€™ve be encouraging some home-turf gigging too, which is never easy being they and their prospering fanbase are predominately under eighteen.

Seems my bleating to DOCA paid off, and all looks set for the guys to perform at Devizes International Street Festival in May, for hereโ€™s something without age limitations which can all enjoy. This is an opportunity Iโ€™d like to see become an annual thing, where we recommend a local upcoming band of the year to play the main stage, rather than any kind of bolt-on substitute. Because these guys thoroughly deserve all the attention theyโ€™re getting, and you thoroughly need to see them perform.

Which you can do sooner, Saturday April 22nd to be precise, as they play a hometown self-organised gig at West Lavington Hall, with support from three bands new to me, Stoneface, Paradigm, and Frankastre. Showing my age, maybe, but Nothing Rhymes With Orangeโ€™s accomplishments are also sharing the attention with a next generation circuit developing, and without trying to sound like a Mandalorian, something which has been “the way” since the eve of rock n roll!

If you donโ€™t wish to take my word for it, someone you should never doubt when it comes to music, Sheer Musicโ€™s Kieran Moore, sung their praises after a sell-out show last night at The Pump, alongside Chippenham-based (I believe?) band The Sunnies, currently taking a similar route. Kieran had this to say, โ€œwow, just wow. When the bands first played, they were a bunch of teenagers looking for opportunities. Fast forward a year, and they’ve both been hitting up Chippenham’s Take The Stage and St James Wine Vaults in Bath, played a number of gigs for us at The Pump, and begun hosting their own gigs in Lavington and generally have grown astronomically quick.โ€

โ€œThat furious year of activity have seen the bands stream line their abilities, build their craft and become the anchors around which we will hang off our scene. Their sounds have become dynamic, more focused, and concise. The crowds now know all their lyrics, and sing and dance accordingly, and the teenagers come and are so respectful. It’s a pure treat to watch this all unfold, and The Pump is beaming with pride, because it’s not just the bands who have been developing, but the team there too.โ€

But, if it’s one incredible thing to see a Springsteen gig, it’s a whole other ballpark to see a Springsteen gig in New Jersey, and wager, least hope for a similar effect in the Lavingtons!

Wayward youths are in the minority, and historically always have been. Sweeping generalisations, tarnishing groups according to age is counterproductive, probably making matters worse. We want to focus on the positives, highlight those youths out there doing good, for really, stuff the clickbait bad press, theyโ€™re in the majority, and here is the proof. Upcoming in Devizes; Nothing Rhymes With Orangeโ€™s Debut EP

The younger they are the more tempting it is to excessively praise, despite honest constructive criticism being far more helpful than flattery. So, I press play on these three tracks which make up the debut EP from Devizes-based teenage indie-pop band, Nothing Rhymes With Orange, with the intention of deliberately finding a possible downgrade or two, to convince you itโ€™s not the case here, which is not as easy as it soundsโ€ฆ…

It’s not even near beginnersโ€™ luck, that which we fondly reviewed their first single from the EP, Chow For Now, in October, and if I went in blind, Iโ€™ve a better perspective of where theyโ€™re coming from now, and predict very soon everyone will, least should.

The fact theyโ€™re releasing an EP called Midsummer bang central in autumn is the only bombast in me. This is unconditionally distinction-type stuff, the like Iโ€™d have said of a band of ten plus years of professional experience under their belts. Far from the odious din of antagonism and rage of many a youthful punk-pop experiment, which isnโ€™t my preferred cuppa, this is universally age demographic spanning, appealing to all.

If they cite their inspirations from The Wombats, Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys, my elderly soul picks out early Jam, and a plethora of bands from that late seventies, early eighties era. Mind, they also cite The Cure; Iโ€™m happy with that compromise, though suggest it’s never as gloomy as goth. Look at the picture, they bounce; Robert Smith never bounced!

Reason being it ticks every box is itโ€™s shrewdly written with original angles on themes of fledgling passion and relationships, yet itโ€™s lively, happy, beguiling, and danceable, and, concluding with a cliche word I donโ€™t like to overuse but find myself in a position no better than to define it as โ€œcatchy.โ€

Recorded at The Badger Set Studios in Potterne and released this Friday, 4th November, if Chow For Now rides a degree of optimism in the despair of a relationship breakup, Creatures is equally as expectantly ingenious and dynamic, commenting on a larger picture of teenage delinquency, reminding me somewhat of Supergrassโ€™ Alright, yet with far more punch. This one is simply anthemic, picture future fans singing back to them, perhaps even more than Chow. But while Manipulation reduces the tempo, proving the boys can execute the obligatory melancholic superlatively too, though subtly, the wordplay steps up another notch. Example; โ€œyou make manipulation seem like a lullaby, go get your education, Iโ€™m not your type of guy,โ€ just, yeah, works.

You can pick these tunes apart and if the characters in Creatures, suggest they think theyโ€™re โ€œcool because they donโ€™t listen to the teachers,โ€ I really hope your English teachers are listening to you, guys, for this is quality badinage, astutely written pop. To retort on my mockery of the EPโ€™s name unfortunately inconsistent to the current season, these tracks were put down during the summer, in a barn in rural Wiltshire. Country schoolkids, huh? Typical, nothing better to do than hang around barns, picking up guitars and drums, practising like hell, precisely promoting, and marketing their outpourings, and coming out with this monstrously superb sound to upstage the best of our local scene, you should be ashamed of yourselves!

The original four-piece line up consists of frontman Elijah Easton on guitar, with the apt strain of adolescent sincerity in his vocals, Fin Anderson-Farquhar, also on guitar, and drummer Lui Venables, with bassist Ivor Ritson who since moved on to be replaced by Sam Briggs. Fast creating a loyal fanbase after reaching the finals of Riverbank Chippenhamโ€™s Take the Stage, theyโ€™ve managed their own sell out gig, and supported upcoming Carsick at Trowbridgeโ€™s Pump. I suggest you do yourself a favour, young and old, pre-save this EP here, ready for Friday, and keep a keen eye on these lads. Theyโ€™re playing a Freaky Friday at St James Vaults in Bath, Friday 11th November, with Chasing Kites supporting Harmer Jays. Iโ€™m sorry not to be able to make it but urge local promoters to get these guys booked.

Oh, for the enthusiasm of emerging talent; new track from Nothing Rhymes with Orange is a surprisingly garage band delight……

My dad never revealed his feelings about being in an amateur teenage band. Though I knew he was, he played down its importance. Sacrificing his guitar for parenthood, heโ€™d shrug and tell me they were never any good, anyway, then explain it was the trend of the era, everyone tried picking up a guitar. A tendency succumbed to electronica and the pop machine of my youth; we grew up hailing the DJ and the sound system. Yet the DIY ethos of swinging sixties is very much revitalised these days, and if thereโ€™s lots of current notable young bands on Wiltshireโ€™s circuit, one to watch are called Nothing Rhymes Orange.

But, if itโ€™s fact nothing does rhyme with orange, I confess to know little else about this emerging talent, save theyโ€™ve a Devizes connection, recently rocked up Lavingtonโ€™s Churchill and supported Carsick at The Pump, as Sheerโ€™s incentive to promote upcoming locals never fails to spot greatness. And greatness it is, if raw and somewhat undercooked; such is the delight of discovering a garage band, as they come out of Martin Spencerโ€™s Badger Set studio with a blinding original track this week, Chow For Now.

Garage is an appropriate blanket term, I was pleasantly surprised not to hear some expected grunge-inspired thrash, rather the balance of indie-pop akin to the Coral, with occasional nod to post-punk, when fitting. This sounds garage, yeah, basslines of early Jam, even, which rings out a beguiling riff of contemporary sparkle, not forgoing an original concept for theme. Ah, Scouting for Girls, or more; taking on local favourites like Longcoats and Daydream Runaways.

Immediate like from me, guys; one to watch. Aside another two tunes in the works, you can find Nothing Rhymes Orange supporting Harmer James and Chasing Kites at a Freaky Friday down St James Vaults, Bath on 11th November. Link-tree is here, go figure.

This is what picking up a guitar is all about, albeit to suggest it takes perseverance; likely where my dadโ€™s Who-like wannabes failed, but Nothing Rhymes Orange seem to excel. Guess Iโ€™ll never be sure about the first, but Iโ€™m certain of the latter.
